The subject of Moderators on The Hub came up again recently (topic link). It's something that has been much needed for some time, but admittedly has been put off - mostly because of the focus being primarily on technical aspects of the site, and partly as I have had more time to dedicate to the moderation function since moving to The Hub full-time.
However, with the tremendous growth in numbers and sheer volume of content posted every day, it's simply not feasible for one person to moderate effectively and consistently.
I firmly believe that any online community should be self moderated. That's not to say that there must be NO Moderators, but that they should play a more passive / reactionary role. I've been to forums where Moderators play a very active role and are particulary strict - and harsh at times. While it certainly kept people in line / topics on track / etc., it created a somewhat sterile environment that many people wouldn't want to visit.
In the case of The Hub, there's no denying that we could use some more structure and direction in some threads, and particularly more consistency in Moderation itself. As others have mentioned, this consistency will encourage more self-moderation from all members through a better understanding of what is acceptable and what is not.
So with that in mind we're looking for 5 Hubbers to appoint as Moderators...
Nomination Process
- Nominations will be open from Friday, 3 December 2010 - 5pm, Wednesday, 8 December 2010
- You can nominate up to 5 people (including yourself) and should include a short motivation of why they'd make a good moderator
- Nominations can be made via Private Message to me, or by emailing mymodvote@thehubsa.co.za
- Once nominations are closed, we'll put together a shortlist of 10 candidates and begin the voting process to select the final 5 moderators.
- Voting will take place from Thursday, 9 December 2010 - Wednesday, 15 December 2010.
So lets get those nominations in!
Thanks and regards,
Matt (Admin)

What is a moderator?
A moderator is a member of an internet forum who has special permissions which allow them to enforce the forum rules.
A key role of a moderator is to ensure that discussions and debates are carried out in an appropriate manner, in line with the Forum Rules. Moderators keep the community together and keep it attractive to newcomers.

So what does this mean?
Moderators have the authority to edit, move and close forum topics as well as individual posts. They can give out warnings when forum rules are broken and step in when things get out of hand.
As a moderator they can still participate in discussions, debates and general chit chat. They are not expected to remain neutral or objective in general discussions, but are expected to be rational and reasonable when acting as a moderator.
