I've just read It's all about the bike by Robert Penn. He travels all over the world to assemble his dream bike. Steel frame in England, Chris King headset, Campy groupset, Conti's from Germany, wheels built by the son of the bluesman on which the John Belushi character in The Blues Brothers was based, Brooks saddle etc.

He also gives an interesting history lesson on the development of the bicycle, the first breakthrough was when the 2 wheels were put in line and steering was added, making it possible to balance the bike. When the pedals and chain was added, the cyclist could use his strong leg muscles to propel. Finally when Dunlop developed the pneumatic tire, it made the ride much more comfortable and the world's most effective vehicle was born.
