certain brands and products hold value, some don't.. if you want to compare to cars.... i bought a Volvo S40 in 2003 for R210k, and sold it in 2006 for R75k... didnt hold its value.. shoulda bought a toyota corrolla!!!!
it seems Giant bikes are like toyota corrollas, and Raleighs / Silverback are like Volvo's???

It always makes me laugh when you hear different opinions on a fair price, it is always skewed by whether the person offering the opinion is currently a buyer or a seller.

Take my learned friend here, who believes that all second hand goods should lose half their value. Could you imagine purchasing a vehicle for R150k this year and then being offered half that amount next year, is there anyone on this hub who would be happy with that, if their are pm me, I might be interested in purchasing your vehicle.

In short any exchange of goods requires a willing buyer and a willing seller, which equals a price acceptable to both parties.

You buy a Chrysler, Renault or Citroen that's pretty much all you're going to get.

first thing you should realise is that bikes and parts can not bee seen as an investment. So don't expect much, if anything back. There was Greyowl2.0 trying to sell a Colnago frame for R3500 and I don't know if he ever did manage to sell it. It sold for over 10k in it's days not so long ago.
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections.

i guess part of the problem IS... we are ALL looking for a bargain.. and we all want new stuff or at least be able to afford the LATEST GREATEST wheelset so thus try and sell what you got for us much as possible?
FUNNY i don't know of any discussion bloggs like this about clothing. because we are ALL getting seriously ripped off by name brands in clothing industry... that quality R399 polo golf shirt you wear saturday arvie to the movies cost the importer R70... or the R249 nike t-shirt cost nike R20..

I don't wear pants or Ts that cost more then R150. Button shirts have a R250 limit. Shoes have a R350 limit. That way I can spend more on my bikes.

Second hand pricing in different markets are determined by their expected life cycles. So you compared a Computer earlier as being worth nothing after 4 years on a companies books, this is because its expected life cycle is 4 years. A vehicle works slightly different as it is worked on its kilometers, SARS deems that the average vehicle travels 30,000km/year, this gives it an average of 150,000km's over 5 years right off period. If you want to compare a bicycle, then you have to compare it in the same manner.

Im not sure what a bicycle's expected life is, but depreciate it the same way and you will find that second hand prices are not unrealistic on the hub.

@ blockhouse

Did you even READ my post?

On second thoughts, don't bother...just go check what 2nd-hand cars cost in properly functioning markets, e.g. UK and US.

Or, check what a previous model year MTB costs (BRAND NEW & UNUSED!) compared to a current model.

"Willing buyer and seller" means f-all if one party exercises monopolistic pricing power or if there is a disparity between their relative negotiating power, e.g. why don't you try "willing buyer and seller" with Eskom or the cell companies or Jhb Water or M-Net or Telkom or the car co's or any number of companies operating in SA and see how far you get?

Basic economics...

The fact remains that you DO NOT NEED to buy a bicycleWhich cant be said of all the other "monopolies/Catels" that you mentioned.Ouch

There is a old saying  Time = Money

Although to be correct it is Time = money when your selling and Time = 1/Money if your buying.EmbarrassedLOL

If you dont have money, like me, your only option is to wait (Time) for the right deal to come by.   This can be a bit trying in our instant gratification society LOL . if you had lots of money you would have bought it new (Zero time).

If people have (more) time when they are selling stuff they can ask more money for it. If they in a hurry they will have to price it lower.

Hang on to your old equipment.
Just sold a pre 1967 Campag Pista chainset on e-bay for 72 pounds.

In the 60's I think it would cost about 4 to 5 pounds. Does anyone have the Holdsworth price book ?? ( if  your South African you won't understand ). It had TA, Stronglight and Campag and that was it.

In those days a pint of beer cost 10pence now 2pounds 60pence.

Now work that out.

I thick thats 130pounds now ( at 5 pounds )

So 50% seems right to me.

PS I have 2 Unica saddles ( black )non of this lether cover rubbish, what offers???

When the pedals come up, bang them down

And if you help someone in the right direction, regarding a too high price, DO NOT shoot the messenger.

I agree with this, but do it via PM, not directly in the sale post. Far too many wanna be 2nd hand dealers on the hub that think they ordain the going rate for a product. These chaps generally just kill the guys hopes of a sale, if you really want to help you would make use of a PM.

If there is a silly buyer out there willing to pay too much, that is his/her problem, should have done their homework.

Same goes with offers below asking price, rather stick them out there via PM, you can create a false perception that the seller's product is not work anything but what you're offering.

All in all I agree there are many sellers out there asking far too much for their used goodies, but that is their right and chances are they won't sell until they reduce their price.

@ Ox Wagon
I don't need Mnet, I don't even have a (working) TV. I do, however, need a bike. It gets me to work and it makes me happy.
In fact, I think if more poor people could afford a bike, they would not need to pay transport costs. There would be less cars on the road and more happy people. Maybe we should change what you consider needs and try and help as many people as possible.
We as cyclists all want South Africa to be a more cycle friendly society- at this stage we are the only ones who want that, yet we are the ones making (or keeping) it inaccessible and elitist. The only way to make it a more cycle friendly country is to get more bikes on the road.

Sounds like your saying:

A wanted ad is not a thread.

The only party posting here is the seller.

Even technical Q's should be directed as PM and updated by the seller.

and the last post the seller makes is notification of completed sale.

So as an example:

SELLER X post1 ...  FOR SALE details, picture, price

SELLER X post2 ...  Have been asked whether its ? compatible, ANS = YES

SELLER X post3 ...  BUMP 1

SELLER X post4 ...  Price DROP!! R1-00

SELLER X post5 ...  Have been asked whether ? is included ANS = NO

SELLER X post6 ...  BUMP 2

SELLER X post7 ... Provisionally SOLD

SELLER X post8 ... ***SOLD***Thanks

NOTE: No other contributions to this ad by any other hubber.

No more: Wow nice bike, good price, this will go fast?

or Is this still available?

or NOOOOOOO braze on?

or I wish I could afford that right now

or If you want to split I'll take the pedals

etc

Or whatever meaningless statement they can think of to get the post count up

So would the rules be: (1) only the poster may script

                                     (2) MAX # BUMPS ???

                                     (3) Precursor in the title that this is a poster only

posting. Something like: <po>. Then we know.
