LOL! Not at all - just got a very rude reply some time ago in response to an offer I made on a wheel set... Loving the shock! :D

Only getting into the sport the last couple of months, it sure is entertaining reading "The Hub".  Someone interested in producing a publication Big%20smile  Sunday afternoon reading?  Oh, sorry, everyone out riding then.

I buy the whole free market thing (supply and demand), but every now and them some really good advice regarding the fair price of whatever item is much appreciated.  Whether or not the seller will let it go for that price is up to the seller.

But hey, don't stop now, I still need some reading before I go home.Embarrassed

Ja well no fine, the free market argument only holds water if the market is functioning perfectly.

As cyclists, we seem to be doomed to be perpetual price-takers, while the LBS / manufacturers / importers are engaged in what appears to be collusive and/or monopolistic pricing.

It would be interesting to see how much profit is earned (% or ZAR amount) at each stage of the chain, i.e. manufacturer, importer, distributor, LBS, the Receiver etc.

Without sounding like too much of a tosser, it always strikes me hoe CHEAP bikes appear online or when overseas...the used-car analogy is appropriate here in the sense that our used-car market is also disfunctional.

The point is that a 2nd-hand whatever should be approx 50% of the new cost, as you should strip out the following to obtain the "true" value of the product (whatever it is):

1. VAT (14% of sale price)

2. Dealer markup (15-30%)

3. Transport (5%)

4. Import duty (?)

5. The fact that the product is now 2nd-hand (10%? 20%? 30%?)

6. Wear and Tear (5%-?%)

In other words, 50% of new price is a reasonable indication for a 2nd-hand good (all things considered) and properly functioning markets in all non-perishables would bear this out.

However, if you don't like the price, you don't have to buy what is, after all, a discretionary, non-essential purchase.

It always makes me laugh when you hear different opinions on a fair price, it is always skewed by whether the person offering the opinion is currently a buyer or a seller.

Take my learned friend here, who believes that all second hand goods should lose half their value. Could you imagine purchasing a vehicle for R150k this year and then being offered half that amount next year, is there anyone on this hub who would be happy with that, if their are pm me, I might be interested in purchasing your vehicle.

In short any exchange of goods requires a willing buyer and a willing seller, which equals a price acceptable to both parties.

Let me tell you, some of the stuff on The Hub are giveaways! Obviously one can't tell what the condition of the spares are, but I have bought a lot of spares at very good prices here.

As have been said by some of you, if the price doesn't suit you move on! Something will come along at the right price.

Just keep an open head guys!

Hi Gents,
Lots of valid points raised, and any advice for a novice should be appreciated.

certain brands and products hold value, some don't.. if you want to compare to cars.... i bought a Volvo S40 in 2003 for R210k, and sold it in 2006 for R75k... didnt hold its value.. shoulda bought a toyota corrolla!!!!
it seems Giant bikes are like toyota corrollas, and Raleighs / Silverback are like Volvo's???

You buy a Chrysler, Renault or Citroen that's pretty much all you're going to get.

first thing you should realise is that bikes and parts can not bee seen as an investment. So don't expect much, if anything back. There was Greyowl2.0 trying to sell a Colnago frame for R3500 and I don't know if he ever did manage to sell it. It sold for over 10k in it's days not so long ago.
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections.

I don't wear pants or Ts that cost more then R150. Button shirts have a R250 limit. Shoes have a R350 limit. That way I can spend more on my bikes.

Like CAAD4(?) and his Cannondale frame now... sad, but true...
