I don't know if it should wait till then - start now! Makes people think twice before trying to pull on over our eyes! Although it's just more "red-tape" to interfere with free-market trade.

My brother got scammed with his PlayStation 3.

Guy deposited a cheque, it reflected so we we posted the PS3 off and 2 days later the cheque bounced. Was a stolen cheque...Windblown organized some friends of his to go to the address, they found 9 Zimbabweans...

Be careful out there guys... Speedi2009-06-09 02:56:51

what happened to Windblown and his friends?

The only exercise some people get is jumping to conclusions, running down their friends, side-stepping responsibility, and pushing their luck!

Hi everyone. I personally think that to avoid these so called scammers, you maybe need to change the style in which you sell your gear. I have sold plenty cycling stuff and I find the following very effective:

Establish a good relationship with your local bike shop. Ask them if you can advertise on the Hub/gumtree etc... and arrange that the parts are viewed at their premises.

Firstly, when you have arrived at your asking price, the salesman has the opportunity to add a little bit for his effort. Good luck to him as he has connections and you still end up with what you wanted.

Secondly, you never have to meet with the person and you tell the salesman that if there is no cash, then no deal!!

This is the way I operate and have never been dissapointed. In the worst instance you may need to drop to nearest cash offer. Atleast you get your money at the end of the day.....

Just had someone named Mike call to purchase a bike I have on Gumtree.

Wants to buy it for his son in JHB who is going to ride the 94.7.

Will pay from his Std Bank Credit card directly into another Std Bank Credit card.  Wants me to find someone with a Std Bank card to do the deal.

Sounds as if he is changing his mode of operation.

How's this one. Today mu secretary gets a call from a guy called Thuli who says he has recently been employed in the accounts dept at one of my clients. He asks her to tell him how much they owe me from last months invoices, and he wants the info faxed to a fx2email number.

Being the compliant bunnies that we are prepare a whole recon and we fax to him.  An hour later the client gets a call from Thuli who says that he recently been employed by me, and that he is phonig to enquire as to when our account will be paid. He quotes the exact amount owing. He tells them that he calling to let them know that we have changed our bank account, and he wants to give them the new account details for payment.........Angry

Luckily the client was sharper than me and smelt a rat, so no harm done - but from now on I guess I will be lot more cautious when a guy gives me a pay as you go number as his contact.

The big question, of course, is just how this scammer knew that I do business with this company.

Something that was in the newspaper is that guys buy 2nd hand cars with fake money. The copies are so good not even the police could tell the difference so just be ware of selling your car and getting paid cash.

rather have them deposit the funds into your account at the bank and do the transfer there.

You know things in this place are bad when even professional escrow companies (Thirt) close because of the fraud...

If only these guys put their ingenuity to some good!

Don't have any good tips for sellers, except wait for funds to clear. Had cheques stolen a while ago, canceled them, but the **** it caused was...

Buyers: Paying by credit card via paypal is the way to go, in case it doesn't work out your bank may be able to get the funds back

You can only buy foreign goods via Paypal, so thats not really going to help. I used to be a Thirt user, was a really great service and a pity they had to shut down.

Exchange control regulations mean that you cannot accept payments on a Paypal account that is linked to a South African bank account/credit card and address. It works really well for buying stuff on eBay, though.
