So guess where I get a flat today. Right at the monument road intersection. With all the horror stories I decided not to risk it, put all my weight on the front wheel and cycled up closer to the highway. The entire time I was changing the tube I was scanning the area for any suspicious people.

THREE alleged mountain bike robbers and rapists had been arrested in Tembisa by members of the Tembisa cluster task team on Monday.

The arrests follow several attacks on cyclists in the Kempton Park area the past months.

Lt/Col Zachariah Motloutsi led this intensive investigation which led to not only the arrests, but also the recovery of a mountain bike, a 9mm pistol and the cellphone of the rape victim.

According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, the suspects were found at Sethokga Hostel in Tembisa. They have been linked to several robbery cases and a rape in the Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein area.

“We believe this breakthrough will break the cycle of these horrendous crimes in the area. The cluster commander, Maj/Genl Leshabane, has applauded the task team for their dedication,” said Mtshali.

Investigations are still underway to establish whether these suspects could be linked to a bout 11 other cases of a similar nature.

The suspects were charged with armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of stolen goods and rape.

They will appear in Kempton Park Magistrate's Court today.

The latest attack happened on March 14 when a mountain biker couple had been attacked and the woman raped while riding along the R21 at the R25 off-ramp.

The woman, in her mid-20s, and a male family member were riding through a tunnel underneath the R21 when three armed men attacked them at about 4.20pm.

They were tied up and held until it dark. The woman was then taken away from the man and raped. The suspects fled the scene with the couple’s mountain bikes, two cellphones and an Ipod.

This was the third incident in four weeks where cyclists in and around the city were attacked.

Mr Sarel van den Berg was attacked, tied up and robbed on February 21 and another c yclist on March 4. All three attacks took place in the same area, between the R21 highway and Serengeti and behind the Engen Garage next to the R21.

I hear you, they probably bought their way out of the cells already! Crime in SA won't stop until the punishment fits the crime, hang rapists and murderers and cut the hands of thieves off, simple, they won't (can't) do it again

If only, I hear you on the punishment, but lately the state makes a total cock up of the case so they don't even get found guilty first !!! Or the docet simply goes missing

Although officialy Joburg, the Sizwe Hospital area is used by lots of East Randers (Edenvale) riders.....

The area of Sizwe Hospital. That piece of open veld between Linksfield Rd and Modderfontein.

Be very careful down in the bushes near the Sydenham side and in the secttion on the Modderfontein side of the river near that funny tunnel under the highway.

Received this email

Just received news via eblockwatch that there was an attempted bike jacking at the Gautrain (Rhodesfield Kempton Park) bridge, riding up towards Simba in Isando, this morning at 05:50. Two guys with guns.
Please be on the look out at all times when riding - please also don't ride alone!!!
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house.. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.

My buddy survived an attempted hijacking there on Friday at about 5:30. He came from the Emperors side and did that U-ish turn to go past Simba.
On the turn they ran at him and kicked him and his bike.
Luckily his momentum kept him from falling, although his chain did come off but he managed to catch it with the derailleur.

I'm usually behind him, so if I was was with, I would have been next in line. This sucks as now we have to find other routes to ride.Posted Image
