Hi. Got this email today. They asked us to please spread the word.

Dear Members,
The following is a notification on what is presently happening on the Cradle Route. It is presently not advisable to ride out there. We would like all our members receiving this message to pass it on to all your cycling acquaintances.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Garth, a resident of the area, for the update. We will notify you of further developments, thanks.

Hi

Not sure if you have all heard, but there has been a problem with an illegal land invasion in Kromdraai. Short story is the residents went to court and stopped the invasion (cost a lot of money) and the red ants moved in on Friday morning and then again yesterday and removed shacks.

The squatters did not take this lying down and started stoning cars , burning tires, blocking the road with stones and destroyed the circle and also dug up parts of the road.

Police were called in and there were some serious standoffs.

I have just been to the kromdraai store and came across two cyclists and stopped to tell them that it was not a good idea to ride through here at the moment. They told me that they had been stopped by some squatters and that the message was that they cannot ride in the cycle lane as this was for them to walk and that the cyclists must pay them to go through the area. The cyclists said they had no money and were allowed to go.

Maybe someone should send the message out on the hub or where ever, that if cyclists are going to ride through here, they must ride with extreme caution.

Regards Garth

Jeepers, I didn't know this! I cycle there often and have only had one incident involving an agressive stare-down, but nothing else. Has the issue been resolved?

I have not heard any official word on it being resolved but my club (Cresta) has ridden there in the last month or so and I went out there recently and there didn't seem to be any problems.

What is Northern Farms like these days? I am new to MTB but have heard a few stories about hijackings at NF. I was there on Sunday for the first time and felt a little uneasy riding the stretch along the perimiter fence on the northern side of the farm.

I used to ride the spruit alone every morning from FPC to Emmerentia and back and never had any problems...the biggest pain i had was crossing william nicole at the bottom of republic at 8am. Way i see it is be silent and quick that way no-one gets the chance to jump out before you're gone.

Welcome to South Africa Warumund. Same rules everywhere in our beautiful country: stay clear of open fields, avoid late nights and early mornings on your own and ....cycle very fast so no one can catch you(joking). Dont cycle with expensive/"wanted" items.
Think at the moment your greatest threat are the cars... so wise up in that area too. Never assume they see you or will give you right of way... even if your on the shoulders, grass, sidewalk. I run on the sidewalks/grass in Randpark Ridge/Boskruin and can confirm cars as my biggest threat.

Nice places to for mtb in the area are: Northern Farms (Fourways, northernfarm.co.za), Teakplace (teaksports.co.za), Hennopsriver, Van Gaalen Cheese Farm, Kloofzight, Groenkloof (Pretoria, but nice technical rides with giraffe & zebra)...and many many more when you google it. Best you hook up with some mtb'ers and schedule joint rides/drives to the venues.

We have some of the prettiest and best mtb spots in the world.
beautiful country and all the 'stay away from' areas? Kind of a contradiction in terms?
PS. I'm hardly referring to the picturesque angle here.

Hi,

New to the site, I am keen rider, and live on the Westrand.

I just heard about an attack on a fellow Mtb'er in the Silverstar area. (apparently in the tracks behind silverstar Casino)

Happened Yesterday afternoon before 5pm. The rider was stabbed (seven times) by an individual with Dreadlocks, he was also robbed of his bike. Luckily his cellphone was not taken and he was able to call for help. Currently in the hospital, where he will soon be undergoing surgery to repair some of the Damage - Punctured lung etc.

Please take care, don't ride alone.
My problem with most athletic challenges is training. I'm lazy and find that workouts cut into my drinking time.

Hectic stuff. Keep us updated if you hear more.

Oh, and welcome to the hub.
"Sliding into an off-camber, eroded turn you make a micro miscalculation. Out of control, you must make a rapid decision, off the edge, or lay it down. Lay it down...damn..torn shirt, bloody elbow. No time to mess with that now (the shirt was old, so was the elbow), how's the bike? Okay...jump on it and feed the chain back on with your hand as you coast the first few yards. Back in gear you really stand on it to make up time."

3 pages off bad and sad news ... must admit I dont feel safe cycling anywhere these days. Just what is it we need to do to simply be able to ride a bicycle down the road without being run over or attacked ? :(
