Lido Loop - TRUCKS, TRUCKS and more TRUCKS!!

Do not ride by yourself or in groups less than four!!! Watch out for thugs by the 'trees' and before the bridge after the steps!!

Mellville Koppies. Do not ride this alone or small groups. The attacks there have been carried out by heavily armed thugs!

The Spruit - There's been trouble at the exit on the Northern side at the 12th Ave bridge. Cops did catch some guys there though, but please be careful.

Also, according the BigBen, the Bryanston bike park can be pretty dangerous. Tongue

The Randburg Sun has had a few articles asking us to avoid Kya Sands on the way to Northern Farms, It seems that a number of bike jackings have happened here.

Yah, this route is almost a no-go area now. The trucks have worked out that there is very little if any policing on this route and speed, drive recklessly and generally use the route to avoid the policing on the main arterials.

I made a complaint in Feb to the EPD (TRAFFIC DEPT) about unroadworthy trucks, speeding, overloading etc after I was almost wiped out by a truck speeding down the road with the cargo of river stones dropping off the back in a steady stream.

There was no reaction and I have yet to see a police vehicle in the area.

A number of cyclist start at Town Square on Hendrik Potgieter. Be careful - early this morning there was 4 very dodgy caracters walking around and checking every cyclist out. One of them fit the description of the Ontdekkers bikejackers. We did contact the police but no response.

haven't been there on my own, never felt threatened but then always were in big groups (cos i don't want to fall there and then lie there with a broken something for days)

Nope, never had any incidents in either of those places

Although Mellville Koppies has a reputation as being somewhat dangerous. I've never had a problem when running there by myself and have only cycled there with a large group of Dogs. Wink

Lido Loop is not to safe even in a group, no matter the size, to the truckers cyclist are a target, or to see how close they can get. How about the Waterboard road, is that still safe?

Peterjohn,

I ride the spruit all the time, from Alberts Farm, Emmarentia, and up to Conrad - never witnessed any trouble, or been a victim of it. I carry pepper spray as the dogs, not criminals, are the issue! For some reason the signs all around that have "dogs on leashes only" emblazoned on them are not visible by dog owners Wink. My wife and I have had some close calls. One day when I unleash a can of SWAT on a dog right in front of its owner its going to stir up one hell of a ruckus!Somehow dog owners insist that "killer", their pet rottweiler or german shepherd was acting most "peculiarly" and "out of character" when they tried to rip you off your bike presumably to lick you to death out of affection......

Seriously though, one one Saturday morning, while out riding in a group of 4, a lady had been murdered between 6 and 7am near the Riverside Spar in Bryanston area, and was left about 2-3 metres from the path. The book I have on mtb trails in SA says about the spruit that cyclists have been consistently and violently attacked on the spruit since the early 90's. The authors recommend riding in groups more than 2 at all times (Herman and Sussanah Mills were the authors.

So its luck of the draw bud. Make sure you can get a rabies or tetanus shot closeby though.... LOL

Inside it is fine. Fenced off, controlled access. Your biggest danger will be yourself

H311 even outside it is fine. Jo'burg is not all that bad and evil as what people think it is
