two cycling titbits…

from afp:

paris - France's reigning Olympic mountain bike champion Julien Absalon has admitted that losing his world title has relieved him of some of the pressure ahead of this summer's Olympics.
Absalon, the world cross country champion a remarkable four years in a row (2004-2007), failed to finish the men's world championship race Sunday in Italy won by Christoph Sauser of Switzerland.

MADRID - Spain's Alberto Contador, who is looking to win the Tour of Spain in September to add to victories in the Tour of Italy and Tour de France, said Monday that winning the world's three main cycling races would be better than winning an Olympic medal.
"I want to do well at the Tour of Spain even if that means that in order to prepare myself better for it I am not at 100 percent for the Games," he told reporters in Madrid.

two questions:
1. will any french rider's be allowed at the games, what with the UCI suspending their national federation, and
2. how many riders have done the Giro/Vuelta double before?

and this from the king of google?

from velonews:

Contador could also match another record if he pulls the Giro-Vuelta double, a feat that’s only been matched by Merckx (1973) and Giovanni Battaglin (1981).

I think the French riders are strangely unaffected by the FFC's suspension from the UCI. Read that somewhere and couldn't quite get my head around it. Still can't. I think FFC officials are unwelcome at any UCI meeting and cannot participate in any decision making during their suspension period, but the French riders may continue racing as normal, probably because they're all clean... please accept this humble apology from your loyal liege. i wouldn't dare suggest that you, the king of google, may indulge in a bed of how's-you-sister, but, being a member of the monarchy, you have to accpet that you may be the product of a few familial encounters in the past…
