no in general he is scared of technical descents and hardly rides them if he is in the front of the race
having said that he is a great XC rider in the non technical races but in my opinion he shouldnt have been at orlds

I understand he has a point....but what are we to do? They race their hearts out and sacrifice a lot for their racing.
Would he prefer they don't go there at all or pull out of the race like the supposedly great Julien Absalon did when he wasn't placing...?
The only way it'll possibly get better is if we continue to send them and support them. And if we criticise, make it constructive.
I'm not bashing you GL....I just don't think you're being fair to them

just read on todd wells's blog that the chinese team didn't let their rider who came 13th in womens U23 eat dinner after her race (she won the first round of the world cup)
keep calm and carry on

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional...go ride your bike.

Apologies to Yolande, I read martelpypies info on lapped twice, thats not impressive. Top 50 not too bad I guess.
I wonder when Cherry raced against Hannele and ERica Green, after they retired?
In 1996 Erica finished 17th in MTB race and 35th in road race at Olympics.
In 2000 she fin 25th in MTB race at Olympics. Best world cup finish was 19th in Houffalize, Belgium.
So along with Hannele's results it seems like we're going backwards.
Someone I know followed Yolande at road SA TT and commented that she looked uncomfortable on bike, not smooth, stylish at all. Wondered if people spend too much time in the lab, too little time on the bike outside.
But she's our best, and beats me.
I wasnt good enough to compete internationally, would be 2 laps down if I went.

Well, I haven't really been following international mountainbiking, especially not the women's racing, but I think it it safe to say that mountainbiking has grown so much over the last couple of years that it isn't fair to compare the results of a couple of years ago with today's results.
The standard has increased dramatically.
If I just look at mountainbiking in the Western Cape where there were hardly any competitors, let alone women, when I started, and now mountainbiking is almost as popular as road cycling.
Mountainbiking is still a relatively new sport in comparison to other cycling disciplines.

In the WEstern Cape there are far less people doing lap racing than 15 years ago. But I cant comment on the difference in standards with ladies, the men are better. Thats for sure. I think CSA must put all their money into juniors and u23. For the next Olympics we need Caitlin and Mariske. SEnd them overseas, after school. Maybe they can be Cherise's supporting riders at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics for the road race as well.

Maybe as a young nation we still take things a little personally when we dont do as well in international competition as we would generally like.
This is no reflection on the young ladies ability, personality, hard work ethic or any sacrifices she may have made. We take it as a given she did her best and thats all we can ask.
Its like me, as a rugby supporter, saying the Springboks did badly in Oz, they lost 48 / 0 - dos this reflect on the individual player, is this denouncing all their hard work, dos this mean they are useless, should I be a potential Springbok to make that statement - Of course not, - I as a fan will still support them, I will still buy a "Bokke' coffee mug, I will still tune in at 1am to watch international matches - I just stated an opinion "they did poorly". - theres nothing personal.
We need to stop been so sensitive, take the post or the statement in context and draw your opinion from there, nobody made derogatory statements about the young lady, she had a bad day and thats it.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away, and you have their shoes!.

The bottom line is that if our riders (and this applies to both the men and women) are not capable of putting out the same sort of average power as the top ten, then they don't have a chance of winning.
It should be possible for the coaches to get hold of power data for the top riders and to do the comparisons.
If our riders are capable of putting out the same sort of power then the rest is probably a combination of experience and technical ability (those races look bezerk compared to our local XC races!)

Mtb isn't quite as 1 dimensional as the road is, on an mtb you have to ride your bike not your numbers.
Not here to make friends, here to tell you your opinion.

Agreed, but one can make a lot of fairly accuaret assumptions based on power output. Like I said, if our riders are fine on power output then you know you need to look somewhere else to find the problem.
