Italian Ricardo Ricco will take part in the Tour de France as a replacement for the ill Jose Angel Gomez Marchante, his Saunier-Duval team said on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Ricco finished second in the Giro d'Italia last month and will be one of the favourites for the polka dot jersey awarded to the best climber of the world's greatest stage race.

Thats great, I hadnt seen that before. I think he is a very talented rider, not everybodies cup of tea sure, but talented none the less.

He should put the cat amongst the pigeons for sure, hopefully we can expect some drama, some words and some post race tantrums. All makes for interesting viewing.

At least we wont see any "Banana issues".

it'll be his second tour. finished way back in 98th in 2006.

Due to health problems that have hampered José Angel Gomez Marchante preparations and a strong racing desire by a refreshed Riccardo Riccò, Saunier Duval-Scott has decided to reshape its nine-man Tour de France team. Italy's Riccò, winner of two stages and second overall at last month's Giro d'Italia, will captain the team for the three-week race where he will have climbing ace Leonardo Piepoli along side for support.

"He asked if he could race the Italian Championships [June 29] and then, if [DS Joxean Fernández] Matxin agreed, if he could do the Tour," Saunier Duval-Scott directeur sportif Pietro Algeri said.

Instead of waiting until after his country's nationals this weekend, the 24 year-old told his team that he wants to race the Tour on Tuesday morning, prompting the Spanish squad's announcement.

Riccò has not officially raced since finishing second overall in the Giro d'Italia, where he also claimed the young rider classification and won the Agrigento and Tivoli stages. The Italian was slated to race the Tour de Suisse, June 14 to 22, but decided to stay home at the last minute.

"When the moment came to depart for the Tour de Suisse he said, 'I don't feel it; I really just want to sleep,' and so on," Algeri said. "I reassured him that he won't lose his form, not in just a week's time, and that if he is tired in the head, after two or three days rest, the desire to race will return.

"He told me that I was right, 'I had two or three days of only sleeping and the desire came back. Everyday [after], I trained just a little bit more and just a little bit better,'" added Algeri.

Riccò reportedly performed a mountain test near his home in Formigine (Modena) and recorded more or less the same time that he had set going into the Giro d'Italia. Algeri stated that Riccò will evaluate his form after the first mountain stages and decide if he will ride for the classification or not.

"He said that he does not have a lot of big adversaries, maybe more at the Giro," said Algeri.

The last and only time he raced the French Grand Tour was in 2006, when he finished 97th overall riding at the side of then team leader Gilberto Simoni. This time around it will be Riccò captaining the squad and will have the help of compatriot Piepoli, who crashed out of the Giro d'Italia.

"Piepoli is going well and has not really raced a lot race this season," said Algeri. "'It was a shame to leave the Giro and not do anything, and I want to do something at the Tour,' Piepoli said."

Juan José Cobo, David De La Fuente, Josep Jufré, Alberto Fernández De La Puebla, Jesús Del Nero and Ángel Gómez Gómez will help fill out the team's roaster, with the ninth spot going to Rubén Lobato, Aurélien Passeron or Rubens Bertogliati.

Piepoli is a fiercesome climber and very underrated, I still believe had Piepoli not crashed out at the Giro, Ricco would have won.

I still think Valverde is the man for overall as Ricco cant TT for toffee, but as far as the White Jersey and the Polka dot Jersey go, I have a feeling he will clean up.!

I am looking forward to him bumping heads with Evans, can you just imagine his comments if Cadel sits on his wheel all day!!Wink

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.

That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away, and you have their shoes!.

Don't think Cadel understands Italian,he will just say "sorry Mate I don't know what you are on about but keep on going because WE are opening a nice gap here Mate"!!Big%20smile

So if Ricco has the same form as the Giro and the Giro is so much harder than the Tour and Contador won't be riding he should take this one easy??Wink

It is going to be a great TdF. Even if the route is much easier than the Giro it is the "one" to win. All the guys are super fit this time of the year. The racing in the TdF is something special, if you win a stage in the TdF you are known world wide where a bicycle is ridden. Barloworld will have their work cut out for them with Ricco going for the Polka jersey and Boonen in top form once again.

He is in "top form", but I dont think its the type you are thinking of, Pirate.

Big Tom wont be riding this year after his little "Coke" habit was uncovered two or three weeks ago, - and thats not the coke of "dark liquid in a bottle" fame.

Otherwise yes I agree, Ricco is a definate favourite for the Polka and he will be hard pressed to not wear the white jersey simply by default, even if he he dosnt want it, there are no other young riders of his capability in the event.

The green jersey will be the main sub contest of interest, a lot of folk are saying Mr Hunter can do it, but........I personally cant see it, without Boonen the favourite has to be Husovd and McEwen, but, stranger things have happened.!

I don't see Ricco winning the Polka jersey.  He would have to attack very early in one of the big Pyrenean or Alpine stages to pull that off, and probably blow any chance of a decent overall finish if he tried it.

Andy Schleck should also be considered a favourite for the white jersey prize.  At least he can TT a bit.

Thanks Porky. I was on leave for two weeks in Umhlanga and missed out on a lot of news, was laying on the beach for most of the day Funny I didn't read anything in the Beeld about Boonen during that time ... Anycase that makes it a bit easier for Robbie I think.

some reckoned it would be even easier considering mcewen's team would be pulling mainly for evans, but the aussie robbie doesn't need a train!

Andy Schleck is the new sh%t!!! , Boonen is out and that sucks, but I dont think it makes it any easier for Hunter.

Hope Soler can do with the magic and score a few stages ont the way...

Either way, this tour is wide open for new faces to step up, but the fav is Cadel Evens 4 the yellow..

Have a great one and post your updates here

Don't discount Cooke for the Green Jersey. He couldn't race the Tour for the past two years because he was on Unibet and the race organisers say that a French law banning foreign gambling advertising prevented them from inviting Unibet. Cooke won the Green Jersey in 2003 (without winning a stage I think) and now he's back with a motivated Barloworld with Hunter as an ally. He's had a frustrating few years (remember that classic crash in the sprint with Bettini at the Giro?) and is super hungry for success, which should be somewhat easier without Boonen in the mix.
