Very interesting. Actually pathetic. Looks a bit like blatant racism to me. Who says black people want to be pilots? Will this be implemented without compromise of ability, standards or safety?

Johannesburg - Cadet pilot training course applications from white men are no longer being accepted by South African Airways (SAA), it was reported on Friday.

SAA spokesperson Kabelo Ledwaba told Beeld that the cadet programme was being advertised online as an initiative to bring pilot demographics in line with the country's broader demographics.

"Only 15% of SAA's pilots are currently black, and this includes Indians and coloureds. The rest are white, and 91% of them are men."

Ledwaba said the airline would appoint male, white pilots when there were vacant posts for which applicants of other races could not be found.

Beeld had asked why white applicants were being rejected across the board.

An irate father had called the newspaper to complain that his son, who had a commercial pilot's licence and met the educational and physical criteria, had been rejected on the grounds of race.

By filling out several dummy applications, Beeld established that the online form had been programmed to reject any white applicants.

Won't help. Tax payers' money will keep on bailing them out, even if you vote with your limited seats. Fact is they have a strong loyalty programme and flights are operating at almost full capacity.

You are quite right, but personally, I have decided to no longer fly SAA.

Perhaps a few letters (a few thousand) to some of the other Star Alliance member airlines may see some action being taken (ie. SAA being excluded/removed from the Star Alliance group)...or maybe this is wishful thinking

Why not chose the best man/woman for the job regardless of skin colour?!! Most of the highly skilled and experienced pilots of South Africa are all being recruited by the well known Middle-East airlines- our loss is their gain I guess

I cannot even apply for the programme, let alone have my application even looked at...

not to mention the ground crew working in Australia and NZ.

aircraft maintenance strikes me as being immensely important when lives are at risk if anything is done at anything less than optimum.

scary stuff indeed!

Hi guys. I'm 15 and really want to be a pilot in the Air Force. Do you think this will influence the airfoces decision to accept white mails as pilots?

So, the guy in charge of a billion dollar plane with 500 lives (including my beloved family?) to be responsible for, won't neccessarily be the best that SAA could find?

Try the British Airforce if you can.

yip.

just like the surgen that might be cutting you open

or the engineer that built the roads, bridges and buildings one uses every day.

this whole choosing people on race is a load of bolloks, govenment and educational bodies need to WTFU and start taking in the best person for the job, black, white, pink or purple.

Does not stop you from trying but could have an impact.  Remember there is more than one way of skinning a cat.

As Caerus suggested, try the British Air Force if you can. The SAAF already follows a similar policy to SAA although I don't think they exclude whites entirely
The requirements of the SAAF are very strict in terms of health, particularly eyesight.
Another thing with the SAAF is the bond period and the amount of flying. I think the period is 10 years and having recently spoken to an SAAF pilot they are currently doing very little flying, particularly those on the fighters.
There are other options to getting a commercial licence if that is the goal. feel free to PM.

This is about par for the course.

Probably not long now before we have the same situation South Africa now has with its Submarines........ie 3 out of 3 non-operational and non-seaworthy.
