In the days before gumtree the same scams happened with IOL and Junkmail classifieds (still do..). I hope that this doesn't become a gumtree- bashing forum. I, for one am happy that there are these free classified sites available, that help me get rid of excess "stuff".
The onus is on the seller to make sure he / she doesn't get scammed. I've had the same experiences as most of the folks ranting here - just haven't been caught. Usually 1 out of every 5 respondents to an ad is a scammer - they never phone, but prefer sms's.
The bank will always verify if it's a cheque or not. If in doubt, then ask them to verify that the funds are cleared and immediately available.
And never, never, never... I repeat: NEVER, hand the articles over until the cash is in hand.
I've had one cheque bounce because of insufficient funds and another was deposited which was in fact part of a bunch of cheque books that were lost in a Cash-in-transit robbery.
IMHO, I believe that cheques should be outlawed anyway. It's nothing more than an I.O.U.

Can u distinguish between an eft or cheque when drawing a statement? I don't think you can & that's the problem here hence the op & so many others got scammed, they think eft is cash, withdraw the funds & 2 days later bank retract funds due to bounced cheque & you sit with the debt.

If someone paid in a cheque and claimed it was a cash deposit, the Available Balance will not reflect the amount and i know the person is talking BS.
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house.. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
