So I read almost all of the topics in the single speed forum and saw the awesom bikes you oaks built. And the urges to build one for myself started...
At first I didn't have the right tools and though it would cost a million, but after the people of flandria cycles in stellies helped me, I was able to build my very first single speed out of an old avalanche reflex. This afternoon was its maiden ride and WOW!!! All of the fuss that was made in this forum wasn't a lie, it was amazing! On the first hill I almost though I was going to crack, but on the second one I caught an oak with a geared bike :-)! Standing outside of my door and can't stop smiling!!! You people were right, there's no looking back now!

So thank you to all you the people that helped build up the excitement on this forum!

Ps. sorry for any incorrect spelling, I'm a afrikaans boy'tjie

It makes no sense this SS thing - you take your gears off and suddenly you smile more. I still don't understand it...

Welcome walcome Matts.

In mitigation - SS is in danger of going the same way as 29er - every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to be on one these days and sadly Dick is the kind of guy that this joke refers to:

How do you know if someone is on an Sser? They tell you.

Long may SS remain a niche thing!

Please excuse the rookie question, but what size does one go for when building a SS? Should it be the same size as your road bike, a bit smaller or a bit larger?

Ed Zackery the same.

The only difference I'd say would be wider bars - sometimes you need to wrench that one gear to get it up a hill!

Oh and wider tyres if you're going rigid.

The bike stays the same. Only the gear setup changes.
