After attending the June Joburg Critical Mass and seeing all the sweet fixies and single speeds, I have had a craving to build one to ride at the next CM

I run BuildabikeSA and have a few goodies lying around from donations that I have received. I dug out some bits and bobs this weekend and have started to assemble the bike.

Think yellow Bianchi alloy road frame (with broken FD mounting), carbon fiber aero fork, Velocity Deep-V wheels, old RD as chain tensioner, Tiagra cranks and octalink BB, flat pinned pedals, Shimano 105 brake calipers, Ritchey stem and flat bar, red ESI chunky grips, white seat and a Dura Ace seatpost.

The plan is to ride it at CM and donate it to someone as soon as I get a nomination.

OR

Fix it up to be like new and auction it off to raise funds for the initiative.

Here's the frame (more pics to follow soon):

Question: Are you not in effect stealing from your own charity (or from the charitability of your donors)?
You can always buy the frame and parts from yourself! :D

Robo... get your own cause before you start dishing out judgements you old clunker!

So what if the dude want's to have a bit of fun while doing good for the community... he did say he was going to donate/auction it.

I say strip it down, hack off the hangers, and then have it powder coated white. you can also have the calipers coated in same colour, or different. fix it up nice and auction/donate it.

So long it goes back to the cause, no issue. Heck, he can even advertise the cause with it. So long it is out in the open that it still is 'for the cause' all is A-OK!

Put a basket on the front and have people drop parts into it at all the rides.

Use the bike as an advertising tool for the cause.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments.

Don't stress, it's all in aid of the initiative, just me rewarding myself for the time I put in..... :P (who doesn't like building and riding cool bikes?)

I've decided that most bikes I give away to commuters will be single speeds as they simply need less maintenance. The bike will have "Build-A-Bike" stickers on it and will go to a suitable recipient when I get a nomination.for one. I have a few bikes that are almost ready to be given away at the moment and I NEED nominations, so bring it on.

So here it is guys, almost 100% done.

All it needs is a test-ride and some minor detailing.

Apologies for the 11pm-kitchen-iPhone photo.

If I get a suitable nomination, it'll make someone really happy I'm sure!

If I don't get a suitable nomination, I'll most likely auction or raffle it off to raise funds for the initiative.
