Ok, so are there any Hubbers that had their tonsils removed recently? I am seriously considering it.
This past 9 weeks have been a nightmare. These super bugs that our kids bring from pre-school are stuffing me around. My son gets a sniff at the most, but eish for the 4th time I woke up, sore throat, ears the works(two times it turned into tonsilitis). And nothing works. I stopped smoking, eat more healthy than ever, daily stuff for allergies etc etc.

Worst of all is that its stuiffing my training around big time! Comments/advise welcome!

Wild piece of advice, I know, but go talk to your doc.

Otherwise, I've been around people recently who have had them out recently and the older you get the tougher it is. But its still better than getting tonsilitis every year, apparently.

Have you tried flu shots? They really help. Echinaforce (expensive and tastes like sh*t) works wonders when you get the feeling you are getting sick. Ignore the water, just take half a capsule straight up and you'll be hundreds.

I've got my tonsils still, been around for a few decades, and have luckily not had issues since my youth. Always heard that it is worse as you get older but I quite like knowing I have all my body parts... well except for a small part of one.

Had mine out  this time last year after five bouts of tonsillitis in six months. It's not an easy recovery, but I haven't been sick once since I had them removed. Used to get it at least three times a year for as long as I can remember.

Only weird thing was that I completely lost the ability to taste anything sweet for about 3 months after the op.

My bud has his removed. Apparently it was the worst pain he had ever experienced, was curled up in the foetal position begging for a bullet.

Had mine out November last year. Best decision I made. I kept on getting tonsillitis every time I returned to proper training. As an adult it's an overnight stay in hospital and expect to be off work for at least a week. As far as pain goes, it's pretty bad. Just as you think you are getting better the scabs start coming off and it just hurts all over again. The lack of an itchy scratchy throat and not feeling stuffed every two weeks is well worth it.

Anybody know how much it costs on hospital plan?

I need to have mine taken out (again) as they grew back and the last 12 months has been hell. Had it again last week.

Lucky for me my parents had mine removed when I was 3.

oh, you be careful Amanda.
Yeah, I found a new friend too, and yeah she's pretty and she's small,
but god damn it, Amanda; oh, god damn it all.

Not the answer you'd like but that depends. If you are hospitalised, and the procedure is covered (some entry level plans have exclusions), then it should all be paid for by the medical aid. UNLESS of course the specialist who performs the procedure charges more than your medical aid covers you for, then you are liable for the difference. UNLESS you have gap cover in which case that will cover the shortfall from the medical aid.

Bottom line, you are better off phoning your medical aid to confirm.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

Basically just wanted to clarity/surety for myself that it would be the right thing to do. Doctors appoinment made, need to get a referral first. (Thanks for the outstanding wild piece of advice, Joe Low :whistling: :D )

I would rather have pain/discomfort for a week or so, even if the recovery is hectic, than to continously have tonsilitis. PLus it would be the right time to do it now, so I can be ready to rock n roll in summer.

I buddy of mine went a few years ago,and he recovered quickly, miost important thing he mentioned was to start eating normal foods asap afterwards. You dont want to have a scab forming, and keep the wound moist, heals quicker apparently.
