So they claim to be near to proving it's existence but what I find interesting is comments like this:

So we’re well on our way to finding the Higgs. But who cares? What does this unimaginably tiny thing, this “God particle”, have to do with the real world?
In a word: everything. The Higgs boson is predicted by the Standard Model, which is kind of a user manual for modern-day physics. If the Higgs exists, then the Standard Model is correct, and physics as we know it lives to see another day. If there is no Higgs, the model is clearly incomplete, and new physics will be needed.

Based on day to day life, if you do not find something then you'd assume that you were perhaps not looking in the right place and will not conclude that it does not exist. Now I assume they have all their theories laid out as to where it should be find but can they conclusively claim it does not exist if they do not find it where they were looking? I would assume they'd just need to keep looking.
