As long as you are a large... I was eyeing the special but there have been no S/M for a while. Assuming the OP does not have a big head :)

Gloves are an interesting thing. I had some but misplaced them and have been riding without ever since without issue. Yeah, I haven't come off so no need to protect the hands but obviously in winter the sweat issue is not such an issue. I do agree they are needed in summer as I have experienced a sweaty hand slipping off the grips before.

I still reckon focus on the absolute essentials. Those things which you cannot possibly ride without out. And there are really only two, a bike and a helmet.

Clint I made the mistake ONCE of not riding with gloves, went to eselfontein for my birthday MTB weekend, we got there in good spirits ready for some hard riding with 100km of pure blisfull singletrack waiting, As we got there we thought while waiting for the others to arrive lets just hop on the bikes for a quick trap to the dam to find the shortest route for the kids, nothing serious just some jeeptrack so we got on the bikes no helmet no gloves I mean just a 1km cycle on some jeeptrack on a farm whats the worst that can happen,

On the way back you hit a bit of a downhill and true to form we flew down there, a tree grabed my barends, and i came down nice and hard, left a good chunk of my left palm stuck on the jeeptrack and took what was left of my hand with me back to the house. Needless to say spoiled my entire weekend tried riding with a mising chunk of flesh but it just wasnt pleasant. Sinc that day if i go around the block on my bike i kit out with gloves. I will never ever ride without gloves again.

Considering you can pickup a cheap pair of gloves for like 80 bucks at your lbs its worth the buy till you get something decent.
Im a Alcoholic with a mountain biking problem :\

Just as the guys say get the gloves, helmet and a warm jacket as it is very cold out there. Also a little benie keep your ears warm. A plastic set of sunglasses not glass in case you fall and break them, the glass wood not be good for your eyes.
We rode the other Sunday at minus 6 degrees. More layers you have will keep you warm and if it heats up one can allways stop and take some things off.
Not forgetting a water bottle, and a  choc bar. A big mistake most make do not drink enough when its cold. You can dehydrate in the cold.

Awesomeness one step closer to a total addiction that will have you question your sanity, when you wonder why your freezing your ass off at 5am in the morning on the trails, only to get home to realize you have  no food till payday becuase you just had to have that new wheelset, its bliss :)

Now once youve gotten yourself a steed, remember take it slowly in the beginning dont push long distances and tough hills yet, stay on something fairly safe and flat for a while till you build a bit of base fitness, never ride alone especially not in your neck of the woods, and lastly dont worry your ass only kills you for the first month or so after that you can ride on a plank and you wouldnt know the difference.

Ok thats about all from the oracle,, well at least for the next 5 minutes.
