I hope someone can help

I have tried Google but no luck and the people at the cell phone shop just gives me blank stares.

My wife recently got her Samsung Galaxy S2, but we cannot get it to download from the ‘Market’. We keep on getting the message: could not download due to an error (497)

What we did so far:
  • Created the gmail account
  • Can connect to the internet
  • Updated the market to the play store
  • Use packet data is ticked
  • Access point does have cell c & Cellc MMS in
  • I can access email on the phone
  • We did manage to update the other application that comes standard on the phone
  • App that I have tried are Facebook, Skype, Endomondo, etc

I really don’t know anymore. It seems like the web is full of this question but no one seems to have an answer

I've had that issue on a couple of Androids. I can't, at the moment, remember how the hell I resolved it.

In the meantime, using the phone's browser, see if you can hit: https://play.google.com/store
and try and send an app from there to the phone.

Can you try if you're connected over wifi, and not 3G?

Hey, no worries, it is just a glitch with Google play, I don't know why nobody bothered to mention that to you; it would have saved you a lot of work. I just got the same error today and had my buddy test it on a totally different phone, he had the same error. I also have the SGS2 and the market was working just fine till this morning. Like I said, no worries, they will fix the bug and you can use your original account.

Another possibility not related to the Samsung but Android none the less:

I want to specifically address the problem of "could not download due to an error" when trying to download from the Market app. Spent a good amount of time looking for fixes before finding this well-hidden on the N2A website:If you are having trouble downloading from Market you need to perform the following steps:
1. Open Settings-Applications-Manage Applications-All
2. Find "Google Services Framework", "Force Stop" and then "Clear Data".
3. Go back to "All" applications and find "Market" and "Nook" and "Clear Data" for both
4. Reboot the Nook, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and you should be able to download again.Try it... it works.

Enjoy playing devil's advocate...

Just an update:

I am nou in deep k@k. I tried to remove the google account and got the message that the factory settings will then be restored and I figured it wont be an issue as no apps have been dowloaded. Now I lost all my wifes contacts as well. It seems like she saved it to the phone and not to the sim. Deep trouble!!

I reloaded the internet setting and added the google account. Still no freaking luck. I hope the post from TNT is right where it says that it a problem with Google play

Does Android not sync with a PC based app or the cloud to save all your contacts remotely?

It's not really designed to sync with a desktop app, although Samsung have Kies that you can use. I just sync everything with Google. Simple.

It can sync with your google account if set up like that.
