Still want to... saw it's all sold out.

Was super keen, but by the time I tried to order they were sold out. Will wait for the next production run.

This might seem like a noob question (because it is kinda) but what would it be used for? I am guessing ultimately schools etc but you would need a mouse and keyboard (2 USB's) monitor (HDMi and video out) and HDD (SD Slot?). Would it be more of a novelty item at the moment for the IT crowd to play with and have a dick swinging contest to see who could do the most with it?
Don't surrender your life to the momentum of mediocrity. Keep following your dreams and one day you will tick them off.

great comment - i would definitely buy one for a bit of dick swinging. No seriously - in all honesty - they could be used for a firewall - backup server (if you are able to connect external storage) -

a million years ago - i built a car mp3 player (before the prevalence of ipods) using an old pc. Hook up a 4+ inch screen to this puppy and you have nice in car entertainment system............
I know all about your new man, your new, older, old man and I heard that he's married;
oh, you be careful Amanda.
Yeah, I found a new friend too, and yeah she's pretty and she's small,
but god damn it, Amanda; oh, god damn it all.

i think its aimed at giving the poorer people access to the power of a pc, and access to such stuff at internet and email.
although you still need a tv to run it, and one with a HDMI  port to boot.
but i think for the techno geeks its just another toy,
one which i could put to use as a media player..

Never heard of it till now, had a scout around online and it looks quite interesting.
Some info from the raspberrypi.org site

All of the first units to be produced are the $35 Raspberry Pi Model B. These are the more fully featured versions of the Raspberry Pi. The main difference from the Model A is that they include an Ethernet port, and 2 USB ports.
We’ve been working hard at cost reduction over the last few months, and we’ve been able to make one significant change to the Raspberry Pi lineup. The $25 Model A has been reworked to include 256MB of RAM– double what we were originally planning to offer – and will be going into production immediately.

We are launching with Model Bs as there has been a much larger demand for them from the community. This first launch is aimed at software and hardware enthusiasts, makers, teachers and others who want to build exciting things with the Raspberry Pi before the official educational launch, which will happen later in 2012.
This means that when we launch into the educational market, there will be an experienced community of people using and making things with the Raspberry Pi. Software will be more mature and free of obvious bugs, and easier for children and educators to use.

Managed to order one on Farnell, but will see if it gets delivered as both sites crashed yesterday.

I'll be using it mainly as a media player.  You can still connect a USB hub to expand and wifi is possible with USB wifi dongle.

media player might be on the outer limit of its capabilities, but would love to try it for that as well...
I'm more inclined to to use it as either:
  • possible WUG machine
  • firewall for home network
  • storage server
  • download server

I think a streaming media player would be perfect (NFS mount or something). Could have one in every room so your music "follows" you around.

Or home automation.

Wow now im really inspired to give the car media player idea a try as well :) It would probably be a good idea to consider hooking up a touch screen. That together with some small hardware modifications such as a mute button and volume control can really make it very functional.

Anyway we'll see what happens I think this Raspberry has the potential to make a big impact on the world and im very interested to see what people come up with.
