My 13 year old would like to buy a jump bike or a BMX with the idea to start dirt jumping. He is a very proficient Mtbiker, used to riding single track and doing drops and jumps. We live close to the UCT jumps and that would be his likely starting place.
What bike would make the most sense for a beginner? BMX or Dirt jumper? New or second hand? He has saved up R2500 and I'm willing to help him out with a bit more.
All advice will be appreciated.
What BMX or Dirt Jump Bike for Newby?

Hmmm. tough one. occasionally there are DJ bikes for sale on thehub for R.2500 to R.3000 but they are not all that common. www.obike.co.za has a GT Chucker for sale for R.4000 which is quite a nice entry level bike. possibly a bit heavy tho. You can also pick up some awesome mongoose BMX's for a steal on junkmail.
I am riding a mongoose Fireball DJ bike which i am really enjoying. i found it on junkmail for R.2500.
there are a lot of bmxers that swear that its better to ride a bmx rather than a dj bike but... only if you land properly! I like having front suspension! So I would advise a Dj bike, particularly if he is used to riding mountain bikes. but that being said if he is short it may be hard to find one that fits him as they normally do not come in different frame sizes.

Hi
There are a couple of second hand options on the hub too, in case you're interested. None are mine but i've just seen them while browsing:
