The swim will be in the Heia Safari Dam. We dont need bouys, everyone just needs to swim around the Hippo once.

We don't want to pay TSA anything, so it cant be called a triathlon, apparently they have the rights to veto those. Maybe a Tryathlon.
I will strap a Go Pro to my dog and we can then broadcast on YouTube without TSA demanding TV broadcast rights.
Budgeted Income Statement
Entry fees (1000@797.00) 797 000.00
Hot dogs sales 6 000.00
Costs :
Case of Windhoek (149.99) For the genius race organisers
50kg of fish past best before date (100.00) To feed the hippo before the race. See Note Below
Box of plasters (15.95) You do need to be prepared for emergencies
Think that about covers it.
Now need to make it a seven event seriies and we are done.
*Note: It is cheaper to feed the hippo that lose an entrant for the next event in the series.

Bwahahaha! And instead of having one olympic distance we can rather have 2 sprint distance events one after the other so everyone have to enter twice meaning double entryfees!!

Just spent 45 minutes watching this video:
Andrew Messick, the new Ceo of WTC.
At about 39min he talks about the 5150 success and costs very frankly.
To paraphrase:
5150 is small money for WTC given the small entry fee related to the resources to create an Ironman quality experience. He specifically says that it is more profitable for them to add two full Ironman distance events that to run a full 5150 series.
He also says that maybe these races would be best run by other race directors under licence.
Interesting.

Hahaha whatever! Obviously they want to protect the Goose that lays the golden eggs. Funny then that they even holds these events then!
Also funny that they market it with "pre entry" specials for 99 cents!!
Triathlon is a money making business and thats the end of that. The proof was in the last 70.3. The same resources were used than 5 years ago yet there where 2500 more entries..............................
Why dont they publish their income statement for all to see?

Andrew Messick has been in the job for about eight months. I get the feeling that if he had been at WTC at the time, 5150 would not exist.
Triathlon is a sport that has attracted money making businesses such as WTC and World Endurance (IMSA) to give us great experiences. (a slight but profound difference from your statement). Compare that to tennis (SA), hockey, yachting, kiting and many other sports which are just as much fun but don't have the commercial driven interests, they really struggle for any sort of mass participation / spectator value.
To put a personal perspective. If it was not for the owners of the BSG series (don't know their name) and Triangle Sports/World Endurance, myself and probably many thousands would never have done a triathlon. We would never have created the critical mass for there to be three triathlon shops in Joburg, umpteen small product importers, spent millions in tourism in PE and EL and to the many other races that are now being held. We would be wealthier, fatter and bored on weekends.
The organisers owe me nothing. I enjoy some of the events and will pay the price they ask. If the value proposition is not within my expectations, I will give it a miss. I think Bela Bela falls into this category for me, I do think they have got it wrong. Ironman - I don't have a problem paying the fee for what I get out of it. It would be nicer if it was cheaper, but I would not wish for less of an event. Even if the entry was a R1000 cheaper, it is a small part of the financial and time commitment to the event.
Don't begrudge people who are good at their business making a fair living from providing something you really enjoy.

Dave, The price of triathlon has more than doubled in a very short time. If the price of organsing the event has gone up by the same amount then I would understand it -- has it?
I do however get the feeling that it is not. There is a difference between making a living and getting rich off something.
True, supply and demand should sort it out...... The problem is just that it seems the Jo'burgers have a lot of money as they keep supporting R600+ olympic distance events.
I am upset yes as I wanna race (like in the past I could do all the events I wanted to) but can't. It is above my budget unfortunately.
I wonder what the last race at Germiston cost to host and what the income/profits were.
How much money did you think the organisers made at the 70.3? Are these profits going back into the sport?

The price for 70.3 is very fair and im happy to pay for an 'international event'. I think local smaller races should be fairly priced to enable the sport to grow. I mean it is not cheap starting in triathlon and it has taken me yers to build up my equipment to a decent standard so i think it would discourage a lot of people to think they had to pay nearly a R1000 just to compete in a race. I think the real frustration is that a year or two ago the prices were affordable and without providing more value the prices have increase dramatically. You also need to consider you have to often travel far distances and possibly even stay the night which also again brings the cost to do a 'race' very high. Xterra lite only cost about R200 which included day license as well as a quality shirt that you actually use. I know they have got sponsors ect but perhaps the ogranisers should spend more time and effort getting sposnsors rather than just hiking the prices! Hook up with Doscovery/Viality - if they can get you 25% off flights im sure they can wrangle a few bucks off a race?
