As trail / AM helmets go, is it worth its price tag?

Nice helmet, looks even better in orange. As far as AM helmets go I prefer the Bell ( can't remember the damn model now)

I need to get myself an AM/MTB helmet. Was considering the 661 from CRC but was told that there are import duties on helmets.

Locally available:
Giro Xar
Fox Flux (no stock)
Bell Variant (no stock)
Specialized Vice

Interestingly enough, using the link above, and including shipping, the Variant is only R100 more from CRC than locally...

Quite like the black one... I've got the orange colour, I like it. Extremely comfortable and adjustable, even on long rides. It fits, ehrm, like a glove.

Bell Variant, that's it. You are right though, I have rarely seen stock in SA. I like the look of the Spaz Vice, but I found it too low in front.

Also check out the Bell Sequence helmet, very cool and retails for about R1300

i just bought a 2012 Fox Flux from cycle lab in Fourways, paid R1080 but they are listed at R1150 i think. was looking at he giro but for more than double the price i couldn't justify the money.
i must be honest it is the most comfortable helmet i have ever owned and despite fox not offering the 3 year 30% pay in guarantee that giro and bell do but cycle lab said they would give me the 30% guarantee offer so for me that was a deal closer.
they do have stock as far as i am aware.
i did the import exercise from chain reaction in terms of a price comparison and for the 2012 with shipping taxes etc it worked out more expensive.
the 2011 version would have been 150 odd cheaper but for the time its takes to get here etc i figure i would drop the 150 bucks and have it now.
this is the one i took, love the color scheme as its a bit different.

Urge will be bringing out a new AM helmet later this year, called the All M.

Have a peek here: http://www.urgebike....tt/all-mountain

There current all mountain helmet is the Endur-O-Matic http://www.chainreac...x?ModelID=69329

Seems they have some good reviews:

@Crackberry I had a Flux, loved it, but no stock in the WC
@Thug I would love an urge, but they don't make it in my size (62cm)

Yup, I have a 2012 Xar. Cool lid. Fits well. Maybe a bit hotter than my Bell Sweep, but that's because the Xar has more protection I guess (being an AM lid).

Had a crash on Saturday 99 er (came off at 54km/h) smacked the back of my head hard on the ground my Bell sweep did an excellent job, no problems to my head got up and finished the race. Looked at my helmet after the race all smashed in at the back did what it was supposed to do perfectly. Took it to LBS where I bought it got 60% off on a new one bought a Bell Volt will never buy a different helmet again. Not saying other helmets would not have done the same job I just no what this one did for me.

I have the XAR. Before that the Xen. I'd go for a Xen. The XAR is not THAT much better, but it's quite a bit more $$$

The Xar and the Xen, like the Flux, offers better protection as it goes lower down towards your neck.

I've got a fox flux which is rather comfy. buycycle had them on special for R520 incl. shipping. It seemed like too good an offer to pass up
