1. go play with both, see which one feels more intuitive,
2. have a look at their respective data analysis systems. Garmin is either online (Garmin Connect) or off line (Training Centre). Not sure about Bryton but THINK it's online only.
3. What maps can you load on the unit (T4a, etc)
I have a Garmin simply because I have other Garmin products, have used them for years, and they all talk nicely to my computer. Also, nice to have one application to plan all routes, etc on (BaseCamp). Garmin has been VERY good to me over the years in terms of support, warranties, etc, so I will continue to support them.

HEman is right, you cannot load maps on the 500 but you can load routes of previously ridden trails, very handy if you want to check out new singletrack at venues.

Got my 500 last year - clocked up maybe 1500km using it so far, plus use it as a HR monitor at the gym since I don't have a watch based HR. Very happy with it so far.
Nivo had great price when I got mine and delivered quick. Not quite as cheap as UK, but less delivery and no uncertainty on customs charges. Delivered quick too.

Interesting - have never seen my 500 battery indicator drop below about 80%, but then longest ride is typical +/- 4 hrs. Will have to keep an eye out, see if it worsens much on longer rides or when it gets older.
