Everyone knows someone. That person smokes the race, training maybe once or twice beforehand. Maybe not sub-3, but a respectable sub-3:30. Damn frustrating. Any war stories?

Got married in 2009 and got back from honeymoon in Thailand 5 days before the race. Rode a 3:20something from A but it was hard. Hard isn't even beginning to describe how kak it was

I broke my arm 8 weeks before the Argus so did no riding for that period. On the day, I decided to "just do it" with plaster cast and all. Turned out to be the year of THE STORM (2009, if I recall right) and I had a very tough time but I finished, unlike a lot of people that did not even start or gave up halfwway. I prefer not so mention my time though.

Why would you choose to do anything without training? The event in question is still over a month hence. Still quite a few weeks to do last minute intensity. You can increase your vo2max significantly in that time and probably lose a kg or two in the process.
I did everything by the seat of my pants. That's why I got hurt so much.

jip, i do not think you need lot of training to become fairly strong. 2007 I did little less than 5 hours per week from jan leading up to the argus and did just below 3 hours (group f). Did do a race almost every weekend and the little training I did was very high intensity.

26" with training would be long ago heard of hubber Lemmer, i think he still holds the record.
