If its fooking fast then then its probably HSPA, not 3G.

I've got a tower next door on top of the church. I was getting stupid speeds from the 8ta dongle

Dumbass. I mean 3g as a generic term for cell phone operator provided data connection.

Also, I gonna mail you in the am.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

If you use the 8ta prepaid, add a promo bundle to make sure it's using the 8ta network. I think by default they use the MTN network which is irrelevant for testing the damned thing. I've just done this.

More details here - see the 8ta support dude's replies.

I have never come across a network locked 3G stick in SA.

I have a Vodafone stick which won't accept my MTN card.

To get your device to work with another sim, you need to flash it (restore the original software)
Most sticks/dongles are made by Huawei, so search for your device, download the software from their website and it does the trick.
You then download the appropriate connection software for whatever service provider you use, and TNT1 is your uncle.

ITO deals, 8ta offer a 3gig for R149 special at the moment, which is the best prepad deal availble. You need to test in your area first. Start by looking at the coverage map on their website.
or go to a Telkom store - most of them are super helpful and can tell you everything,
Dont wish me luck. Luck is for the unprepared. Wish me speed

carefull of specials, if you roam through the other networks it doesn't apply.
