Does anyone know of any good vegetarian cook books or diet plans for vegetarians?
I have started to really cycle and train hard. I've moved up from N to H last month alone and since january have become vegetarian.

When I started cycling 8 years ago i was a vegetarian and as i got a better i gave it up, feeling the need for protein and not being so keen on dairy. You can do it on beans and lentils but I guess you'll look for protein powder and other supplements to help.
Iron is another thing to watch for as you can get it from green leafy veg but its not in the same quantities and doesnt absorb as well as from meat.
Eggs and dairy is the way to go but its still animal product.

Thanks guys. My wife has been Veg for 20years so I thought I would give it a shot as well. I have a pretty solid vitamin regiment on the go and will make sure to keep the protein up with some powder. Tofu, beans, and lentils can only get me so far. Lets see how my energy goes. I managed to do quite well (for me) in my last 3 races and moved from N to H, but got sick after the 126km. Been off the bike since. I'll get back on and see you at the Medallion!

I'm kind of with Joe Low on this.
i was a vegan when I started riding casually again in 1998. That period was the healthiest I can ever remember having been. When riding became serious I took to adding dairy products and eggs, and these days I also eat fish occasionally. Having taken up running as well, and at my age, I think it's wise not to skimp on the protein.
Most people think of me as vegetarian because the vast majority of what I eat doesn't have a face.
Our favourite cookbooks include the ones by Alison and Simon Holst (Meals Without Meat and Very Easy Vegetarian Cookbook).

There is an elite Triathlete/cyclist called Nico Pfitzenmaier that I met on a 5 day ride through thE Karoo last year. He did a talk on fundamentals of riding on a vegetarian diet. I know he is based in Cape Town and has won the mixed category of the Epic. if you can find him He could help you .

I've been a vegie for about 10 years now.
I'm a downhiller so i don't have to be fit. lol.
I suplement my diet with nuts and soya. I take a Vitamin B and Calmag powder due to shaking legs (It doesn't bother me but pisses my wife off) I use a protein shake after any strenuous exercise (Motocross, Downhill, Trail riding). I do think my protein intake is too low but i'm not too bothered by it.
Carl Lewis, possibly the greatest track and field athlete of all time, has always been a strict vegetarian so if anyone tells you NEED meat to perform as a top athlete they are talking utter bollocks and ask them if they can run a sub 10 second 100m.

Although lewis did supplement his vegetarian diet with banned stimulants. I bet that also played a part in his success.

"Fry's vegetarian sausages..."
No. Taste nice but they do something awful to the contents in the manufacturing process. Stick with unmodifed foods. You may also want to take an amino acid supllement as I believe two amino acids are only found in meat.

Eat meat, ride a metal bike and drink lots of beer.
It works for me!
It works for me!
Out of the night that covers me,Black as the pit from pole to pole,I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance. My head is bloody, but unbowed.Beyond this place of wrath and tearsLooms but the Horror of the shade,And yet the menace of the years,Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate,How charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate:I am the captain of my soul.
