Hey guys, my girlfriend got a call from vodacom today, and basically someone tried to upgrade her cellphone using an I'd book with her name and ID number and a different picture.

Now we are about to go to the cops, I've frozen her bank accounts etc what else can I do? Has anyone the same missfortune?

Thanks guys

Get a new girlfriend. Clearly she hasn't got them means to buy you new bicycles anymore. ;)
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. They wake up in the morning and that's the best they're going to feel all day

I'm not sure if this is possible but try to do a credit check. I know banks can do this & when you open up new clothing accounts.

there was a thing on carte blanche on sunday about this. Basically she to apply to some body that her identity has been stolen and for the next 3 odd years everytime she needs to open something she has to present things in triplicate. Sorry no nice way to break it to you

Just ran a credit check on her! Seems like the jock strap has opened an account at foschini.
Thanks for the info about carte Blanche, I'll watch it on dstv catch up later, hopefully it will give me some more guidance.
If we have to jump through hoops to apply for credit, the so be it, better than someone taking out crazy credit on her name.. This is so flipping frustrating, feel so violated and it's not even my indentity

& they probably maxed out the credit limit? We're you able to confirm this via NCR or how did you find out?

I had a yearlong nightmare with Telkom over something similar. It tends to pop up again when least expected, so keep your eyes open for quite a while after you (think) you have sorted the mess out.

Yeah, carte Blanche was informative last week. It's some anti corruption dept you have to register to,(go read it online) she'll keep her id no etc, but each time her id is used to apply for credit, it'll be flagged and she will have to go through more checks to get credit, which will cripple the scammers.
My sister's identity was stolen some months ago. We immediately moved her cash to a safe acc to keep her going, and notified the credit companies.
Don't bother to try and find the buggers.it's a waste of time. It could've happened anywhere where her id copy, payslip were handed in for credit, workplace, bank.

info is available on the net.
on friday i found a doc (results for a mountain bike event a few years ago) that listed my name, id number, telephone number, address, medical aid number . oh and my time for the race.

at 94.7 there were lists with names and id numbers against one wall. now if you have an id number for a cyclist, you can go to cyclelab's online entry page and get access to, and change, the person's telephone number, medical aid details, details of next of kin, address.

when i asked for a password on my details, the administrator told me that no-onw would do such a thing :S

Guess we need a bit of education out there.

It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.
