So my petrol was stollen out my car last week sometime :cursing: At first I thought it was siphoned out through the gas cap, but when I went to go fill up over the weekend, petrol started spilling out all over the place... A hole was cut in to my fuel filler pipe! And for those who do not know what that is - it's the pipe that runs from the gas cap next to the wheel well in to the petrol tank. This little 1.5m pipe to replace new with labor would've been about R1600, don't even get me started on the cost for the temp fix, aka duct tape! Managed to get a pipe from the scrap yard though at a much cheaper cost!

Now this is where my real gripe comes in, the guy at the scrap yard said that I was the 6th customer that they've had within a span of a week to get the exact same part for the exact same car! Now what prevents it from happening again? Does anyone know if you can get flexible metal pipe to slipline over the plastic pipe?

EDIT: It's a Hyundai Atos.

What car?

My car doesn't have a pipe you describe that is accessible from outside. I mean, you'd have to strip a seriously large portion of the rear quarter to get to the pipe.

I had the same happen to me towards the end of last year. Fortunately I have 2 tanks with 2 pipes running next to each other and they chose to cut the Spare tanks's pipe which was empty. It's easy to get to my pipe and so i just ordered a new pipe (R300) and fitted it myself. My mate who drives a Toyota Hilux had the same happen to him twice , but here the fix is not so easy. It cost him around 2k to get the fuel tank out and replace the pipe. He can weld a metal plate over the gap where his fuel pipe is visible. I have to clad my pipe with metal or something like that, but haven't worked out how best to do it. I drive a Nissan Patrol where the pipes sit behind a plastic cover in the wheel arch.
It's going to happen more often as the price of fuel increases. Makes me as mad as you. :cursing:

What car have you got?
It's not the speed that hurts... It's the sudden stop!

Not much you can do. You can buy a metal sleeve from a place like autostyle.co.za , but it's more decorative than anything else. You can also try finding a reinforced pipe from a hydraulics supply co, but that may turn out to be expensive. Also, you need to look at the spots where the pipe connects - if it's easy to find / take apart, you've got another problem.

This sucks.

It must suck to know that a theif would only steal the petrol and leave the Atos behind... Sorry to hear about your loss. Where did it happen? (Home, shopping centre, car park?)

Hahaha... yeah, he could've probably carried it away on his back and saved me a whole lot of trouble!

I think it happened at home. Not sure cause I had an mtb accident and didn't drive my car myself for nearly a week.

Mmmm. I'm think mildly explosive device with indelible neon yellow dye, or something, rather than metal plates/pipe cladding. And that's the better of my thoughts...
