I have spoken to the content manager at Mnet, and he said they DO play the adverts louder than the rest of the usual content.
It was Paul who said the reason they do it is that the viewers still hear the adverts when they go for a cup of tea/have a pee etc, ie the sound carries to another room

Did you tell the wanker he wakes old people up and scares them!!!!!!!

All the shows .ads etc.. you watch / hear on the radio are mixed and mastered at different studios around the world, using different equipment, and different sets of ears. the broadcasters simply cue it up and play it.

Different parts of the world have different standards with regards to how equipment measures relative and average loudness. The USA (ATSC standards) and EU (EBU standards) in particular are working on a global policy for broadcasters and studios / production houses to as a means to standardise DBU output standards (or how loud productions are) in order to combat this.

i.e all ads, shows, movies etc... will have to be produced at the same relative or average volume. As far as i understand , the global battle plan with teh powers that be, is to enforce regulations with regards to how different manufacturers put together their loudness meters / measuring devices.

The other train of thought is that all nations / broadcasters around the globe have to adopt one of the major standards, to my knowledge africa and south africa in particular are looking at using the EU's (EBU-R128).

in reality though - when the producer / agency rep is sitting behind you writing the check and says "gosh guys, cant you make it louder" bet your ass thats what we humble audio sluts do ...

Ive also heard that some of the bigger Consumer Electronic manufacturers in Asia are looking into ways for your TV / Radio to analyse the volume in real time and adjust the volume for you as ads chop n change etc...
