Hi, does anybody do this ride Randparkridge to Alode, its 38 ks each way which is not a problem but it looks like I would have to ride with all the taxis on the lower end of joburg. Any tips

Scout a couple of different routes by car. If it feels 'unsafe' in a car, don't try it by bicycle.

Taxis, on the average, are MUCH friendlier to cyclists than motorists. When you stop next to one at a traffic light, make small talk - they drive the same route, day in and day out, mostly at the same times as well. It pays to make buddies along the road :)
When I open my mouth (especially on forums) It's either with tongue in cheek, or to change feet :)

They might be friendlier, but they don't often leave enough of a gap when passing. Alrode is an industrial area isn't it? That would concern me.

What route would you take? Beyers Naude, through Auckland Park and Mayfair, then find your way onto KlipRivier and then Swart Koppies?

I reckon the problem with that route, is you're gonna be taken out by a car or truck on Hiedelberg road.

Yeah, I wouldnt do it, Alrode is very busy and there are a number of refineries in the area so big tankers are common, but Heidelberg road through City Deep is murderous, its congested with container trucks, buses, cars, actually anything that moves, if I remember correctly someone got killed cycling through there recently, certainly not safe at all.
I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather......not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car!.
