Sorry chaps...the figures on the website are correct!
  • Ultra - 3070m
  • Marathon - 2120m
  • Half-Marathon - 950m
The course is similar to previous years so riders dont have to stress to much.

* Due to the severe rains that Sabie experienced 2 weeks ago, certain sections of the route might still be changed.

Thanks Tim. Must say I don't think I am the only one that will be a touch relieved. Have not been to Sabie for a while and can't wait!
2 9er even rolls nicely off the tongue

Can you guys who recently made the jump from half-marathon to marathon comment on how much effort it took? The Sabie half marathon has watered down from a 45 to a 38km.
Or did I choose the wrong marathon to take on as a first timer?
I think, therefore I go fast

IMO, big jump - can you say 'Mamba switchbacks'?

Yes the mamba switchback's are quite hectic!!

But going to the longer distance is all about intensity, if you keep your HR out of the red for the first half of the race and start pushing a bit more the last half you'll be surprised.

I've recently started doing the Ultra's and I'm managing well, and its all down to pacing yourself, dont get caught up in the hype at the start.

EDIT: And when I say "managing well" I mean completing them within cut-offs and not cramp and die along the route.

Yeah, prob not the best one to try for a first one. It depends how much training you have done of course. My opinion is that no matter the amount of training you do, it is still a bit of a jump. Your body doesn't know what to expect. So rather start with a race with less climbing...

Its a big climb - but fun, just pace yourself. As IJ says don believe the hype of the bunch, just find a comfortable pace, even take a walk if the going gets too heavy on the pedal. And slukking GU's en-route too early is not going to help!!!

An remember, for every up hill there is a downhill, and a most awesome one at that. What normally gets me is the undulations towards the end, they always never seem to end in those forest routes. Hoping to better my 7 hours last year :o

I made the jump from Half-marathons to full last year. I must say I much prefer the longer races! I find its easier to find a rhythm and stick to it. It's completely different racing though! Going back to do short races now, kills me. I'm sure you'll love it!

Oh, good - you made the ultra even longer.
Hope it stops raining, or we may end up at 130k!

Never ridden in Sabie - what would the recommendation be for the Marathon - 29er hardtail or 26 FS?

Under no circumstances must anyone attempt to ride the Sabie Classic courses prior to the race. Permits to ride in Sabie can be obtained from the authorized sellers but the route for the race does not follow the existing routes, deviation from these routes is trespassing.
