I was at the event and this caravaner, came passed us very, very close, it was another cyclist, myself and tandem partner riding just inside the yellow line. This guy hoots when he's right next to us, fortunately I moved slightly left cause the caravan was a little wider than the car and that just missed us. There was NO oncoming traffic so NO reason to be so close. Where the accident took place it was a double lane road with a nice wide yellow line area, and the roads where not busy, so again no reason to get close to the riders at all.
This driver was just being a Doos, I wish there was a way to prove intent and have some charges laid against him.
It was my first time out there and the roads and venue are great on the route we did, my Tandem partner did say the route was new?
Same experience as my girlfriend. The caravan missed her by centimetres.

I heard that the police were there and took statements from witnesses. Apparently there were three riders that saw the incident happen in front of them. Hopefully the eyewitness accounts will lead to charges being laid.

Update on the rider that he is still in hospital. Seems like the car's extention mirror knocked him down.
I think, therefore I go fast

Glad he's "alright" didn't look too good when I went past. I'm surprised the driver didn't think of the mirror hitting someone or thing

I stopped supporting the races in the vaal as the event organiser there likes to cancel a race the morning of the race after you travelled all the way South from Jhb.

That's no venue for racing. Organisers should be prohibited to organise a race on such narrow busy roads without any closure.

Very sad news, but sometimes the organisers are to blame a little too, not only motorists.
After today's event at the same venue, I agree with you. Rode out towards the N1 and had to go through a stop-go section where road maintenance is being done today. Wtf! One lane open, maintenance trucks, irate car drivers who had to sit and wait for us to pass, out and back. The rest of the road surface is very poor and potholes galore, ankle deep or more. All unmarked. The road surface might not be his fault, but not changing the route because of the road maintenance, is inexcusable. From now on we will boycott this organiser's events untill he decides to take cyclists' safety seriously.
