Hi, are you in Cape Town and want to try out track cycling over the holiday period? I can help even if you don't have a bike. Contact me for more info on jaco@trackcyclingsa.co.za. I'll introduce you to the sport through a coaching session run by Trackcyclingsa. Also have a look at my blog

I see the velodrome and athletics track is going to be closed next year while they carry out some building extensions. Bit of a bummer because its the only track in Cape Town.

...until then training will continue and I encourage more people to try out track cycling and enjoy the sport. The track is open for most of Dec and Jan.

There will definately be riding in the Cape and the year kicks of with a highlight as the German national team is training at the velodrome in January.

A full league calendar has already been booked and these are the dates released by WP cycling for the league and other major events:

Here are the dates for the WP Track League for 2012 as well as other dates:

24 January
21 February
13 March
30 March to 1 April WP TRACK CHAMPS
12 June
10 July
14 August
11 September
9 October
13 to 14 October CPT GRAND PRIX
6 November
13 December
14 December
26 December BOXING DAY (PAARL)

Worst case scenario we go to Faure st in Paarl to ride while the velodrome is closed.

I think i'm gonna give this a go: I dont have a road bike, so how to proceed with getting a bike that fits me? what else will I require?

I wouldn't advise it. Aside from the big differences in bikes, the banking at each end of the Velodrome with your normal road bike cranks are most probably long enough to to clip the concrete followed by a tumble and some roasties.

Hi Capricorn, email me on jaco@trackcyclingsa.co.za and we can make arrangements. Trackcyclingsa club has bikes that caters for most sizes. 6 riders have already signed up for this. I hope that you can join in.

Hi,

It would be dangerous to try this on a road bike. Please email me at jaco@trackcyclingsa.co.za and we can make arrangements. I have timeslots for 24, 25, 26 and 27 that we can still use to give you a chance to ride this side of the year.

Trackcyclingsa has bikes to train most sizes of riders.
