After reading all the scuba threads over the past year we have finally decided to take the plunge! Our scuba course is starting next week Monday at 6pm. This is perfect timing as we are going to Zimbali for 2 weeks on the 14th of Nov. My question is, where do you go for diving at coast and who should I contact. Any leads would be appreciated.

Oh yes we are going to buy all our soft gear this weekend and will be renting our hard gear till the SWAMBO is happy with the whole diving thing. We have been for a trial in March and all went well, problem is we could only stay in the shallow end so you never know what your ears will do.

Thanks!

Cheers

Welcome to the abyss!

Sodwana Bay is good, I normally stay at Sodwana Bay Lodge.

Best bet is to probably head 300km up the coast to Sodwana or 100km south to Umkomaas (Aliwal Shoal).

Dived both.

Prefer aliwal.

So much so that i am going there next weekend.
Out of the night that covers me,Black as the pit from pole to pole,I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance. My head is bloody, but unbowed.Beyond this place of wrath and tearsLooms but the Horror of the shade,And yet the menace of the years,Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate,How charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate:I am the captain of my soul.

Thanks - glad to be of help.

Its an amazing world under there.

You will only truly appreciate it once under water.

I have so far in the last year dived ponta, sodwana and aliwal.

But ive been back 3 times to aliwal.

The conditions are rougher - but definately worth it.

Schools of lion fish, plenty shark - rays, turtles, dolphins.

Its beautiful.

Who are you doing your course with?

Save up then for a visit to Inhambane in Mozambique. Guinjata Bay. The dive sites are pristine and you will see manta rays, and shallow enough reefs to see fish and reef at their best in termso f colour and brightness. My very first dive was at Guinjata and I got close enogh to a whale shark to stretch out my hand and touch it, if i'd wanted to. When you're at Aliwal ask the guys what time of year it is that the sand sharks come in for their breeding season, and mark off your diary for that period. The sea bed is covered with 100's of sand sharks. You can't swim around them- you have to leopard crawl along the sea bed so as to not disturb them. And you must vist raggy tooth cave- you may be lucky enough to see a shark inside it- an incredible world, magical.

My wife's a booking agent for Red Sea Liveaboard diving trips. We're putting together a trip for Setember.

Visit Red Sea Diving.co.za for more info. All of the photos on the site were taken by me last time I was there.

I was at Aliwal two weeks ago and took this shot, I use slides so I had to wait for it to be developed, it loses a bit in the scanning process, but I kinda like it.
