As CSA is not really concerned about cyclists who believe you could actually use a bicycle as a means of transportation, I have been playing with the idea of creating a loose forum/ society/ association/ information clearing house to represent the needs of cyclo-commuters and cyclo-tourists.

The initial idea is to share information regarding safety, routes, camping sites, accomodation, equipment ext. If we establih a centre of gravity, we can then move onto engaging CSA, government, SA Tourism ext for benefits, improvement of infrastructure, better rates and so forth.

You comments and support for the idea will be appreciated.

In terms of commuting yes we need some 'grass-roots' organisation to lobby, even fight for cyclists rights, much like the London Cycling Campaign does (or used to). Have raised it here before but never got much response.

There is so much scope for this, especially in Jhb probably the most cyclist unfriendly (and dangerous) city in the world.

As long as there is no meetings I am in.

Being a former commuter and quite vocal commuting supporter during the power outages 2yrs ago, I seriaasly support this. Am also starting touring so ja. Something like this would affect me. CSA only care bout the pros anyway :( Us plebs are just that: plebs :)

see also the other thread and link on the hub re the Cape Town City looking for feedback on commuting habits - worth adding our voices to that right now

here's the link to the survey for transport month - adapt your replies to indicate your use of public transport and bicycles

i'm in seen as the 12 years i've been in JHB i've been on the bike commuting for most of that...
i belive the more bike's the better our roads will be. A change in peoples attutides towards commuters is the first goal that needs to be addressed.
its also the Hardest to achieve..
