Read somewhere that it shuts off the brains ability to tell you that you're hurting, my IDT sessions collaborate with that,
anyhow...
I use the genius app on Itunes and make playlists that are very heavy, that way I lose concentration of everything going on a round me and can just pedal.
Will give the list of artists tomorrow when I find my Ipod

Use it before a race for running/rowing/cycling.

I was under the impression that listing to music while traffic is doing 80 km/h next to you wasn't the best of ideas.
I do ride MTB on the dirt shoulders though, am I overly concerned about the risks?
I also believe the universe is not without a sense of irony, so if I do listen to music, bands like "As I lay dying" probably won't be on my playlist

and just the other day i found out that smashing pumpkins seems to have actually been made for cycling.
my current best would be chambermaid swing from the kranked 7 soundtrack... check it out, it is AWESOME for running cycling and even erm.....pumping.
