Boonen's directeur sportif left the decision on whether to continue on the rider himself after other riders complained that the Belgian was a danger to the peloton. Horner was allowed to ride to the finish in the presence of the race doctor, but he had no recollection of the crash or how long he had been chasing.

Ye, saw a video of Horner crossing the line and he was asking everyone what happened, where did I crash, how long have we been chasing for etc. Shocking stuff, really felt for the guy. Must be end of the line for his tour career now.

Scary stuff in that clip Luke.
Wonder if the sport will catch in regard to head injuries whereby the final call on a rider continuing is made by the race doctor!
I mean contact sports like Rugby, boxing, MMA etc have that in place, cycling should as well. Klapping solid ground at 40 odd km/h is just as lethal if not more so.
Hope Horner comes right!

Horner was back to normal today, says the team.
And he is going home.

That's a hectic list! This has been one messed up Tour so far with Radioshack and Sky being the biggest losers.

We arent alone in thinking this Tour has been hectic. It seems much worse than previous years.
Perhaps the difference is that its so many more big names than ususal.

It seems that it's not as bad as we think.
Look at this article from Cyclocosm: Has the 2011 Tour really been more dangerous?

Leopard trek seem to be the team that is still complete and strong, Saxobank haven't had too many crashes but bad luck, Cofidis have had the most punctures so far, following yesterdays stage, the list grows.

Likewise Vino, apparently he has a broken pelvis and a broken arm. An arm he could recover from but a pelvis is a career ending injury, and its possible he will have lifelong issues from that.

Add now to add a few more names to that, Squier..

And big names at that too - Zabriskie, Vinokourov, van der Broeck and a few other DNF and DNS.

Did u chaps see the "incident" with Contador and Karpets on Stg 9?
From the camera angle looks like Karpets got p’d off with Contador for crowding him so he shouldered him out of the peleton.
Reading on cyclingnews.com it does appear that it was intentional.

Contador was lucky, he could have got hurt.....LOL

From AP:
Amidst all this mayhem, it almost went unnoticed that three-time defending champion Contador had crashed for the second time in five days, although he did not point the finger at blame further than his own bike.

Contador, who had hurt his right knee crashing on stage 5, fell early but recovered to finish the stage in 12th place.

"I had a problem with my handlebars, which knocked into another rider's saddle," Contador said. "The bike hit me on the right knee again. It was a bad day, I was in pain for the whole stage ... with a bit of ice and rest I can recover."

Are those figures also of the 1st week or the whole tour? if it is the whole tour then our thoughts are vindicated, if its also the 1st week then i guess not.
