I grew up there (along with iRide and his bros). But back in the day I was a roadie, of all strange things, so never got to fully take advantage of the spectacularrrrrrr trails those Natalians have. If you can, you must. Some good stuff down there!
You said it man. Nobody f*cks with the Jesus.

Grebel,
Check out Adrenline cycles or Howick mountain bike club for group ride info.
Otherwise you just arrive, sign the indemnity form at the Hospital (bottom of Curry's post road-opposite the Corner post pub) or one of the cycle shops. You don't even have to pay! The routes have sign names and its pretty easy to get around-just follow your nose for the best experience! I don't have the track for GPS devices I'm afraid but this map should do the trick.

To my knowledge, there is a daily/annual fee payable to ride the Howick trails - this can be attended to at Howick Cycles - this can be confirmed by Ken Pascoe, of the Howick MTB club (0825723297)- this contributes to the upkeep of the trails. The mtb club has a paid staffer, who spends 2 days a week, maintaining the tracks.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated

If you are in the area give Ken or Adrenaline Cycles a call. Always willing to assist with rides etc.

I was there a year ago and Ken took me out for a ride on New Years eve. Was awsome to ride with someone who designed a lot of the trails. Even had a beer at his place afterwards. Great hospitality.

Rode in Karkloof with the adrenaline cycles guys. Can't remember their names but the guys wife even brought a flask of coffee for me coz they were late.

Was 2 great rides with good guys. Can't wait to return.

Is it safe to ride alone?

Generally very safe to ride alone unless you come off, in which case it is therefore best to ride with somebody, an added bonus is to ride with someone who knows the area well. Get in touch with Adrenaline cycles if from out of town as they will possibly be able to hook you up with a guide...

Oh yes-those trails cost a fortune to maintain so please make some sort of contribution!

Antoo, you are right. If you pay an annual fee you can ride Howick trails all year long and it helps the club out with trail build etc. If you're a day visitor you don't have to pay anything-just make sure you sign the indemnity form! I think if you are a Howick mountain bike member you can even ride at Karkloof trails for free, and the annual fee is tiny for all the riding you can do!

Nothing beats this group of riders/clubs in Howick in my opinion. Great trails, great stories, dedicated people that get out AND BUILD TRAIL, and good hospitality. Everything mountain biking is meant to be about. Go there!

Chickenrun4me, Haha! Pull the other one. These maps take about a week of full time work to get out. South Africa is quite a big country ;D

Thanks Stretch, I have updated the link again. And b-rad is right, if everyone made a bit of contribution every time they rode those trails, then I'm sure the Howick club would be very happy!

I rode a few of the trails, about 3 hours worth one day between Christmas and new year. It was raining that early morning and the trails were slipery. However, they were amazing. It was an absolute pleasure to ride there. I was on my own so rode with caution

I parked at the hospital and after signing the register went out.

Thanks guys, it was a great mornings ride. The one trail that sticks to me was "The Gnome", and just as God made little apples, there was a gnome.
