The 13TH WILRO LIONS CYCLE CHALLENGE took place on Sunday, 17th April, which slotted just perfectly
Into the strange weather patterns being experienced recently. Saturday 16th, saw the West Rand experiencing
continuous drizzle falling for most of the day, and the Monday after race day saw dense fog make conditions
as damp as ever. However, Sunday morning, and the very early morning saw beautiful clear skies, but out at
TARLTON INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY, at about 06h00, the skies changed, and the overcast weather rolled in,
with a slight breeze blowing in from the North. This was going to be a challenge for entrants doing the 114km,
as the last 20km was all heading in a northerly direction, and this would really split the bunches, and keep everyone
awake, and keep the gaps minimised. The start line saw many entrants shivering, even those wearing arm warmers,
or jackets, but this would change within 7km of the start, on the drag up towards Maropeng.

Luckily there was no rain at all on race day at the venue, and the kilometre long sprint to the finish was made even
faster with a great tailwind blowing the riders across the finish line!

If any entrants still have their timing chips, please return them to Cyclelab, Centurion, or Fourways, or
Sportsmans Warehouse at Princess Crossing. NOTE these chips cannot be used at any other event.

The organisers would like to thank the following sponsors and supporters of the event:

TARLTON INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY. The owner and employees at the raceway, providing a fantastic venue
for the start and finish, and the catering, enabling entrants to refuel after the event, and the large space for parking.

ER24. To the professional staff from ER24, ensuring professional coverage of entrants over the entire route, even
having a helicopter on site, as emergency standby for any serious cases.

MONUMENT TOYOTA, CONSTANTIA. Providing lead vehicles for all the licenced categories, and sweep vehicles
to pick up any entrants that had mechanicals, or were unable to continue with the race. Their continued support
is an invaluable service that is greatly appreciated by organisers and entrants alike.

WEST RAND AMATEUR RADIO CLUB. Providing communication coverage over the whole route, with ‘hams’ on every
intersection, providing feedback on marshalling points, and updates on progress of the race.

CYCLE EVENTS. The team provided entrants the ease of entering the event via website, providing the riders a seeding
to ride in batches of equal ability, plus providing venues for registration on the Thursday and Friday.

SPORTSMANS WAREHOUSE, PRINCESS CROSSING. For manning the last waterpoint, as well as providing the
Venue for race registration on the Saturday, some vouchers for lucky entrants, PLUS the lucky draw prize for all
‘Early Bird Entries’, of a Mountain bike. (Well done to Alon Levin!)

ABI/COCA-COLA. Providing the events truck for the sound at the start and finish, and also providing the drinks along
the route, and at the finish. They also provided the start/finish arch, but due to the high winds, had to be removed
from the start area.

SPECTRUM SPORT. Providing the timing of the event, ensuring that all entrants get a race time for the event.
Results can be found on http://www.spectrumsport.co.za.

MR PLASTIC. The provider of all the route signage along the route, as well as at the venue. Thanks Shaun!

INSUREX INSURANCE BROKERS. The staff manned the waterpoint just after Magalies. Thanks Chris!

RAWSON PROPERTIES. The staff manned the waterpoint in the bundus, just before the N14 on the 114km
route. Thanks Sjarko, again, and we appreciate you not hesitating to man this furthermost point!!

REMAX PROPERTY GROUP. Leon and his staff are always willing to man this busy watering hole, which services both routes.

COUNTRY WIDE MEDALS. For the fantastic medals that are given to all finishers every year.

DAMELIN, WEST RAND. Natalie Franklin organised the troops for registration on the 4 days, which had some challenges,
and also the learners assisted with taking the timing chips from smelly and sweaty legs on race day

MOGALE TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT. Bryan Murray and staff, for providing staff to ensure cyclists have safe passage on the
Routes, and to ensure traffic on the route are made aware of the approaching race.

CENTRAL GAUTENG CYCLING. All the officials that ensured that the start was running smoothly, with entrants starting
at the correct time, and that the various licenced categories had a commissaire with them , to ensure fair racing, and
then also capturing the category prize winners at the finish. They also assisted with queries at race registration.

ROODEKRANS SECURITY. Providing security guards in the parking area, to ensure that all the vehicles are safe while
the cyclists are participating in the race.

MONTIC DAIRIES. Provided juice for all the foodpacks for the marshals, as well as at the Hospitality tent.

WESTGATE WHEELERS CYCLING CLUB. All members that assisted with the organising of the event, ensuring that race
day ran smoothly, and that the entrants were safe along the route. The members also helped at registration, and ensured
that all entrants knew where the venue was, and the procedure with temporary timing chips.

FRIENDS and FAMILY of WILRO LIONS. These volunteers assisted with marshalling the various points on the route.
Some had to stand in the cold and wind for many hours, but never hesitated to man their points. Without these people,
ALL volunteers, this race would not be able to run.

The 2 BIKERS, Bones and Karel, for assisting with the Elites and Vets bunches, patrolling the road, in front of the bunches!

Lastly, the ENTRANTS. Without all of YOU, this race would never take place. We hope that your race was safe and that
you will return next year.

Regards,
The Race Organisers,

This was my first Wilro race and I will be back next year. The sign posts were GREAT, the marshalls were brilliant and the venue was just awesome.

I am not competitive, i am a casual rider just aiming to finish and I think sometimes we forget what actually goes into such a well organised event.

Loved it!
