My dad - a serious cyclist for his entire life was bike jacked today at about 8am on the Lion Park road just near Northern Farms. The bastards stepped out and pushed him off his bike onto the tar road. One had a gun. They rolled him onto his stomach tied his hands behind his back, stole everything except his clothes and were going through his stuff when someone saw him and chased them off. He now sits in hospital icu with a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a punctured lung and a hairline fracture of his pelvis and ball joint (remember they forced him onto his stomach and tied his hands,,, - agony with these injuries)! How is this happening, how is this ok and what is being done about it?? I love SA but I am not enamoured with its' people at the moment to say the least. Who the F*(k is buying these bikes cause that is the only reason these bikes are being stolen in this manner. I think getting a serial number log with owner details is a way to go and before you are allowed to enter races, ownership has to be varified. Also when you buy a second-hand bike registration has to happen on the site. I will post separately, but his bike was a SPECIALISED EPIC, Black with red trim, white fizik saddle, Hayes break system, Shimano x9 derailer and maxis tyres. A polar 800s watch and heart rate monitor.

I think getting a serial number log with owner details is a way to go and before you are allowed to enter races, ownership has to be varified.

Even if enforcing it proofs to be difficult an results in inconvienance to me I would support it 100%

Thanks - it is going to be hard for my dad - he is the kind of person that the minute he feels sick he gets on his bike and does a long ride to chase the bugs away!

Sorry to hear about your dad, its attacks like that that have tainted my view of the majority of people in this country. Cowards is all that they are. Is that Mapogo or whatever it is called still on the go? Someone needs to be there in the locations and find out where the bikes end up.

Why not show us the way and write ten letters to ten influential cycling bodies/organisations laying ou the structure of your plan, complete with goals, intermediate goals, suggestions and of course, an offer of some sort to help with the admin of such an undertaking.

Post copies of the letters here so that we can use it as templates to forward to race organisers of races we enter in?

Only then may you point a finger.

Contain your emotions and be part of the solution.

Bad news about your dad, hope he gets well soon and gets back on the bike.

On my way to work this morning I was thinking about being hijacked the guy that got smacked in his face and bike stolen, and how it would affect him in the long term. Would he ride alone, would he ride in a group or would he even ride again. I imagine it must play on your mind every time you ride past someone. Whats is going to happen.
Its not only the guys that get hijacked that are affected , other riders are also affected by thinking about the incident and if it will happen to them when the ride in certain areas.

Really sad hoe this can affect us all

Yes, I would imagine it would stay in the back of your mind whilst cycling. I, the fort-holder at home am also affected because every time my husband goes out I become concerned if he does not return near the time he estimated and I begin to pray that I will see him again. I am not a neurotic wife but I am aware of the dangers and cannot believe that this carries on unchecked!

Don't know about Mapogo? But I agree - many people must see "the spoils" and it is only with the help of such communities that these guys can get caught - the absolute callousness of these attacks means that these guys are fantastic contributors to society - NOT!

I must admit that your response did surprise me. I think this general apathy is what has allowed us to accept crime and just find ways to work around it. I want to take and stand and become part of the solution.
