Roag Series: R20 000 1st for women and men

ROAG Series Press Release

The KwaZulu-Natal based Race Organisers Admin Group (ROAG) last week launched the inaugural ROAG Series with the biggest first prize for a mountain bike series in the country.

The aims of the ROAG Series are to boost interest in mountain biking by recognising up-and-coming youngsters and providing a platform for weekend-warriors to challenge their mates, but it is the R20 000 first prize that will excite the country’s elite male and female riders.

The ROAG Series will consist of ten of the largest mountain bike races in the province during the 2012 calendar year, with a Grand Prix-style points system deciding the overall and category winners. Riders have to take part in at least seven of the events and their best seven results will count toward deciding the winners.

Most of the races are between 40 and 45km distance and all take place in KwaZulu-Natal. The series starts with the CycleLab Wartburg Classic on February 25 and includes the 105km Sunday Tribune Jeep Hill2Hill in September before the series ends with the Mountain Splendour Mania in November.

The series organisers anticipate the series will grow to include events outside KZN in future.

ROAG is currently in discussion with a series sponsor and hopes to increase the prize money, but for now have agreed to underwrite the prizes and promised a minimum of R20 000 for the overall winner of both the men’s and women’s series.

All age categories will be included with riders younger than 14 being recognised in the intermediate 20-25km races at each event.

The series will host a year-end ROAG Series Awards Dinner where riders’ achievements will be acknowledged, and dedicated series riders (who have ridden all ten events) will receive a ROAG Series memento.

For more information on the ROAG Series and the ten events, visit the ROAG website (www.roag.co.za/about/roag-series.aspx) or contact Megan at the ROAG Offices (086 100 ROAG).

Knysna Pennypinchers/Coaches Corner Cycling XCO#1

The first race of the SWD XCO series, presented by MyTracX, was hosted by the George Hillbillies MTB Club at the NMMU Saasvleld Campus. The 6.4km track included some old favourites like the Grave Yard and Damn Climb and although not very technical, still proved to be a test for the riders with 136m of climb per lap. With quite a few riders away at other races in other parts of the country, the podium positions were wide open for contenders and delivered some serious riding, especially in the single track.

The sub-juniors supplied some close racing in their classes with 8 year old Carlo Coetzee showing some older riders how it is done. In the Juniors Waldo van Niekerk (RE-CM) and Tayla Odendaal (Contego) took the top placings while in the Under 23 Class Jason Meaton (Coaches Corner Cycling) moved to the front of the pack at the start where he stayed throughout the race to built up more than a 5 minute lead over the other riders.

Although a light wind was blowing, it was hot inside the forest with riders emerging covered in dust. Everybody enjoyed the well ridden in course with some tree roots and a few rocks to supply some technical riding. The down hills had some fast flowing single track with some leg burning climbs to follow and short sections of open jeep track to give the riders a chance to have a drink. The Saasveld campus with all its facilities and ample safe parking always makes for a great venue where the fourth leg of the series will again take place. The next race in the series will take place on Saturday, 21 April 2012 at Witfontein outside George. It would also be great to see more juniors, especially girls, getting involved in cross country racing, as the numbers are still very few to really grow the sport.
Full race results and pictures will be available on the www.mytracx.com website.

Cape Pioneer Trek 2012 Route

From the Cape Pioneer Trek Newsletter #2

"The most exciting news will certainly be the promise made by Henco Rademeyer (Dryland Event Management) that walking will be kept to a minimum during the seven days of racing.
"We have decided to shorten the stages. This means that the middle markers will race, at the most, five to six hours per day instead of the previous eight and more hours."
It would be interesting to find out how Dryland came to the conclusion that the 2011 route was way too tough for the middle of the pack mountain biker.
I must say that I am tempted to tackle this again, but I will wait until the 2012 route is launched.

My son turns 10 this year and is really disappointed at not being able to ride the Argus MTB this year. You have to be 12 to ride. He found the 13k race very boring last year and looked forward to this one. 2 Weeks ago he completed the Porcupine Ridge 28km with ease.

I think we'll just join the race as they cross the tar road at Boschendal....
